Quality of Engineering
I think you may be right Bletchley, the firms in the UK involved with the manufacture of the Clerget engines were rather 'agricultural' and this may well have effected the quality and the part that broke first. It is interesting to see the condition of the Clerget 9J in Lincolnshire, there is a crack in the aluminium of the cylinders. It would be interesting to discover if this is due to poor quality or rough handling.
The Bentley engines were manufactured by engineering firms with more experience of internal combustion engineering.
I have found a Gwynnes brochure on the 9J, waiting for the copy!
All the best,
BR
