Previous: Aeroplanes 1914 - 1918* -* Breguet's Aircraft Challenge* --

The rules:

1. The thread title must be "Breguet's Aircraft ID Challenge #......"
2. The score board, link and rules must be copied to the beginning of each thread, so that we know where we are. The score board and the correct answer to the challenge must also be placed at end of each thread.
3. The completed aircraft must have been either; designed, built or have left the ground during the '14-'18 period and be identifiable by the poster.
4. The photo must show the whole aircraft - from whatever angle, or at least 2 views of a 3 view drawing (photo by preference).
5. Challenges which depict a machine already earlier presented are disqualified (always check the list at Aeroplanes 1914 - 1918* -* Breguet's Aircraft Challenge* -- when in doubt !) and the poster re-post within the same thread, the 12hours handicap beginning from that point.
6. If there is any doubt as to the eligibility of an aircraft for the challenge details should be PM'd to Breguet BEFORE the aircraft is submitted.
7. Once someone has got 5 correct answers under their belt they become an ACE. Once they become an ACE they must wait 12hrs after the posting of the new challenge before they can post an answer.
8. To be eligible for correct ID an answer must include at least one characteristic of the aircraft that helped in its identification.
9. The first person to ID the challenge correctly gets to post the next challenge. If this can not be done for any reason Breguet himself will post the next challenge.
10. If an ace gives the correct answer too early, the challenge is over, he gets no point but has to post the next one. In lieu of the fact that the "novices" have in effect been "cheated" of their "exclusive" time that next post should be a relatively easy one. Anyone repeating the correct answer at the right time gets neither a point nor the right to post the next challenge.
11. The final arbiter in relation to questions about the rules is BREGUET.

Based on the inter-wing fuselage position, unique vertical tail and I struts, this is the prototype of the Priessel (Priesel) KFP fighter.

It was designed by Oberleutnant Guido Priessel (Priesel) who had been released from service to work on aircraft designs. Priesssel was killed in a crash on 20 March 1918 and the KFP was turned over to Major von Petroczy to prepare it for flight trials. The machine flew in early April 1918, but based on wind tunnel testing in early August 1918, redesign was undertaken. Changes included, among other things, a new tail and the replacing of wing-warping with ailerons. In 1920 the KFP was offered to Czechoslovakia.

Dave was right on the mark!

Only, has your S-key jammed ?

Guido Priesel had only one "s" in his name. And the abbreviation should read "KEP" (Kampf-Einsitzer Priesel).

Some additional facts: The machine was built in the Wieland workshops in Vienna early in 1918. It was powered by a fully enclosed 145hp Hiero engine. In his brief entry Keimel told it had a "special aileron control".

The free mounted wings give the impression the whole wing was mouvable around the single upright strut. But I believe the warping was done by the oblique strut, that bend the front and rear part of the upper and lower wing.

Cheers

Exactly, the Kampfeinsitzer designed by Oberleutnant Guido Priesel.

Priesel was no newbie in aeroplane design as he designed and built - as a graduate engineer - two machines prewar. In his time of service with Flars [Fliegerarsenal] during 1915 till his death in 1918 he designed and partly built a monoplane (not finished) and lastly he realized this Kampfeinsitzer (literally 'Battle single seater').

In meantime Priesel invented and patented at Flars for instance a synchronization system for machine guns, although I have not been able to locate the Austrian patents yet.

The wing construction of the KEP was extraordinary as the top wing had no connection to the fuselage and was only connected to the lower wing via the single struts. Flars judged the wing construction as dangerous enough to prohibit military fliers to fly the machine! So the machine was flown by a civilian pilot.

Quote:
In 1920 the KEP was offered to Czechoslovakia
It would be interesting to see the evidence for this statement - given by Grosz, Haddow and Schiemer - as this offering would be quite remarkable, because
  • the peace terms decreed that all aircraft had to be handed over to the Commision Aéronautique Interalliée de contrôle en Autriche and destroyed
  • it would not be a generous gesture of the Austrian government to offer this machine to Czechoslovakia as military fliers were not allowed to fly it in 1918. Especially as Czechoslovakia was before 1918 part of the Austro-hungarian empire
