There have been a couple of accounts stating or inferring that Luke used as many as five SPADs. As noted, the Durkota book on MoH fliers is certainly the best source, with two birds ID'd.

FWIW, I regard the Champlin SPAD is a very authentic reproduction (you'll get an argument in museums about repro-replica definitions). Yes, there are minor differences between Dick Day's bird that Doug commissioned and the ones seen in FL photos; I suspect that Day & Herb Tischler went by plans of another contractor.

The SPAD now in Seattle probably will have to be recovered before long; the fabric was getting brittle when the move was made. However, I'd be surprised if a new paint job replaced FL's.

If I'm not orating elsewhere on D-Day I hope to join Doug at the MoF's new dedication. Will be on the lookout for any Forumites, including Kommodore Scott!

MoF be shorthand for SMoF which be shorthand for Seattle Museum of Flight. (I'm doing some work for 'em and get used to the internal shorthand.)

Barrett,

What type of stuff do you do for the museum?

Do you know if the D Day event will be open to the general public? A pilot friend and I are very anxious to see the new collection.

Lastly, a texture test of Lukes #26 upper wing surface. I should have the texture done soon and I am planing to render some scenes featuring Luke's plane.

Any and all comments welcome.

BUT....does anyone know anything about the markings for Joe Wehner?

I'd like to see *wink* *nudge* some FL with Wehner flying CAP above him.... B)

For real?

I love it and only look for this one thing:
Some few highlights - gentle, subtle - the breadth of the thing.
But that's just me - some prefer, some do not and I certainly defer to you folks.

Here's the logic:
If there's darks on the low end, they're typically shared with lights on the high end.
One makes the other.
The latitude is which one is stronger, either or both.
Does that make sense?
"Lightest lights next to darkest darks."
real old school but nice if handled well.

Nifty thing is: in the huge majority of cases, specifics such as a/c side number remain unknown or speculative. Other nifty thing: it's possible to position the unknown aeroplane so its number is obscured. Though I suspect some diligent researcher may know Wehner's assigned number, whether he flew that machine on a given day remains in the lap of the gods.

Paint on, I say! Or CGI on, for that matter, too! As we've noted, art is all and all is art! Variety is life! Life is variety! (In other woids, some like Fords and some like Chevys...)

Actually, I had been thinking of that very scene. B)

Luke and Wehner together would be a very fitting piece for both pilots.

I would also be very interested in any info regarding markings or plane number .... on any day... for Joe Wehner. I should pose this question in the aircraft section.

Ohh, also I would be interested in the "two blue-green Fokkers" mentioned below.

Quote:
Lieutenants Dawson, Luke, and Lennon destroyed balloon near Boinville (confirmed) and Lieutenant Clapp destroyed Fokker north of Verdun (unconfirmed). Lieutenant Wehner destroyed two blue-green Fokkers at Barcq and Lieutenant Luke destroyed enemy balloon in vicinity of Buzy (all confirmed).
Jasta 13 maybe???

Yeah, for reals. I like to hear what people like or dont like. It helps me to see what might be obvious but for some reason, I just don't get it

Overall the image is flat and I do see your point.

Alan,
Thanks You might have to wait till next week for more Time to work on this is escaping me at the moment. Stupid real life work
