As they say in Shaft:

That's just the way it is.

[b] Barrett,

What type of stuff do you do for the museum?

Do you know if the D Day event will be open to the general public? A pilot friend and I are very anxious to see the new collection.

Any and all comments welcome.
I've done most of the display panel texts for the Champlin collection; it's about finished now.

The publicity I've seen is specific: the Personal Courage Wing will be open to the public for the June 6 dedication at Boeing Field. I would like to attend but may be orating elsewhere in conjunction with the D-Day Encyclopedia's release. At any rate, SMoF offers a terrific opportunity for Pacific Nor'westers to congregate.

Hi all,

One thing I noticed in the painting above is how dynamic it looks, especially in the little details. For example, the exhaust is glowing red!

A lot of artwork, whether painted/drawn by hand, or in the computuer is technically correct, but it misses those little details.

Regards,

I'm old enough to remember the comments when Keith Ferris began showing control inputs in his paintings. Previously that didn't happen much a-tall. Some artists had thought to add expended shell casings being ejected from WW II fighters, but relatively few. I think that as buyers became more knowledgable and demanding, so did artists. Omigosh! A case of the market being driven by the consumer.

I didn't see that anyone posted the link to Merv Corning's paintings, so here it is.

Leach® Heritage of the Air Collection
http://www.leachintl.com/heritage.html

The Leach® site is very confusing and in frames, therefore I posted the URL to the specific page containing 46 paintings. (not sure if that's the entire series)

If you go to http://www.leachintl.com/ and search around a bit you can find the history of the collection and bio info on Corning as well.

The Bishop painting is done in a real cool "Group Of Seven" style that honours all Canucks and dey heritage.

Tim West:
The colors of the cockades and the camouflage color and patterns are not correct, they do not conform to any SPAD XIII manufacturer's pattern.
suggested references are: Cross and Cockade Journal (US) 'Project Butterfly", Vol. 9, No.1 1968, Vol.13 No.2 1972 and Vol.13 no.4 1972. Albatros Production Ltd. SPAD 13 C.1, Windsock Datafile 32 . These will provide the correct patterns and colors. SPAD provided the camouflage scheme to each manufacturer, which was folloed with some variation to the basic pattern by each manufacturer. The colors were fixed with no variation.

This is good stuff. My library is rather small and limited as I have really only "seriously" been into collecting books on WWI for the last 2 years. I buy what I can find, but most of my photos and drawings for the SPAD were sent to me, with little in the way of text to describe what is shown. So I make choices based on 3 or 4 versions of the same concept or in this case, color and markings.

I had suspected that SPAD would have had a directive as far as a pattern follow, but was unaware that color variation was fixed.

Thanks for pointing out some sources to look for the correct patterns. Really it is a great help, its hard to know what is the best choice for reliable information.......Thats why I love the Aerodrome

I have decided to start the Luke texture over from scratch and hopefully I can get a better result.

Below are some swatches I made. They depict 4 versions of a 5 color Spad scheme. I like 3 and 4. #3 would be my first choice, but the champlin plane looks more like 4, so what do you guys think is the best set that matches the 5 Spad colors used.?? Also the outline is 2 versions of the underside blue/grey. Here I like the one on the right.

Again, thanks for all input.
