No more Fokkers!
Image size 4000x3000x300
Made in Maya. Rendered with Mental Ray and post work done in Photoshop.

This is not quite what I had in mind when I started but his is what I ended up with. I wanted to capture MvR's 79th and 80th but my camel model did not stand up to the challenge. So what is portrayed here is one of MvR's "undocumented" flights in Fok.425 in April 1918 Also present is the white marked plane of Weiss and a un identified plane as seen in a few books. I took the liberty of updating the crosses as the photos show it as having old crosses in March. Also they did not have access to any more blue paint, so the cross fields were updated using white instead. Really it could have happened.

hooeeee....fun!
Tim,
this is really a great piece - I am most impressed...it just seems to keep getting better and better.
favourite plane would definitely be the one banking in the top left. my only serious critique would be the control surfaces...though the planes are rendered brilliantly (imho) I'd love to see some play in the aerlerons for example.
still...mind blowing where 3d can go now
cheers,
Jonathan

Some finer details.....
This is supposed to be MvR......No laughing allowed! He is all PhotoShop. People really are not my thing.
This pilot on the other hand is modeled. His name is Dirk ver.4
and finally the underside of Weiss's plane Fok. 545. If you look close, you can see I forgot to add the serial number.....oops!
The whole image took about 2 weeks. The initial render took 5 hours to complete.
The clouds were created in photoshop.
Thanks for checking it out. Oh yeah, no more Fokker renders for a while as I am really bored with this thing now.

Jonathon...thank you! Glad to hear the kind words.
Your crit about the control surfaces is actaully something I debated for a bit. 425's rudder is actually deflected a tad but your right, a tad more might be the ticket.
The one thing I have heard from pilot friends is that it really doesn't take a whole lot of control movement to get a plane to go where you want it to go....generally...so my question would be how much is too much I suppose.

well they are deserved...this is an excellent piece - and the close ups attest to that!

I noticed the rudder and it was part of the reason I wondered about the aelerons..or elevator for instance. I'm not a pilot (yet ) but with 545 for example, you'd think there would be a tiny bit of play considering the angle it is climbing.
These be MINOR concerns...the whole thing - including the PS MvR are supoib

Tim- Great cowl on the Dr.Is. Most people have a hard time capturing the bottom bevel, but you got it just right.
Just noticed what a detail nut I have turned into. Will start admiring girls for their freckles next, I guess. Talk about missing the point.
Overall great effort and effects, Tim. You get better on every render.
