Albatros D3

here a prelim render of an Albatros D3 that i just finished.
the wings are stolen from the D5a of course
but the fuse and tail had to be totaly remodeled.
and it was quite a pain - this fuse is a lot more complicated than the later models as it fairs out to meet the wing - very WW2ish.
primary refs were the Bob Waugh plans (excellent as usual)

some of the details are still off a bit.
but now I have something to put up against the N17.

be fun to start making some pictures again

yes, the treeline in the background is from a photo I took a while ago.
I'll bet i have more photos of empty fields than anybody

the ground is rendered and I just kind of hazed them together.
The D3 is not realy ready to take the foreground so i didn't want to go nuts.
original render is only 2k across.
still, I thought it had a nice overall look

Bob Waugh - not exactly sure who he is, but he created a very comprensive set of plan for the d series albatros aircraft.
but I'm pretty sure he's australian and I think he basedhis plans on the Dva at canberra.
in any case ... an impresive piece of work
includes most of the internal structures and best of all they are dimesioned!!

You can find the Dva plans in the Mikesh book and in a couple of back issues of WW1 Aero.

I needed to model the D3 for a book cover illustration
Mike Westrop's RNAS 6 book due out this spring.
also did a bunch of n17bis profiles

I am actually thinking of taking a hot air balloon ride this summer just to get more pictures of empty fields

Not sure what I will do with these photos.....maybe a book called "Wasted spaces.....Wasted time"

I like the render and most certainly the textures. What I like a lot about your stuff is that I can "tell" its "your" stuff. Your work has a style that is consistent and recognizable. A lot of CG out there, might look cool, but the feel and style is the same as 20 other artist. This is something I have been working on for a bit now and hopefully some consistency is starting to show.....its just cool to see CG with a "style".

It will be cool to see some action shots.

Bob Waugh is an Australian historian. He was involved in the initial restoration of the Albatros D.Va in Canberra, Australia. He did some drawings of other Albatros types as well.

Another beauty! The lower fuselage area by the wing root doesn't flare out, but is flat sided. The flaring effect is accomplished by triangular fairings that are attached to rounded corners for and aft of the wing root to complete the shape.

I'm excited to see this one come along!
