tripe and mud- new

A new one, fresh out of the oven...a quick digital photo taken on the back porch a couple of hours ago. Color and contrats aren't quite right, but it gives an idea. I don't know what the scenario involves having this thing out in bad weather. There must be some plausible explanation, and I'm sure the scene only lasted a few seconds. And I haven't done anything involving MvR in ages, so I thought I'd join the fun...maybe this is 127/17. maybe not and it's only another Jasta 11 machine. I don't know! I'm really after the overall effect.
Also, I realize now that it's almost the same angle as one Tim did! No connection, but another case of great minds etc etc.....
oh yeah-18"x24" acrylic on Masonite

P.S. after this shot was taken, I went back and added more grunge here and there

Awesome!

Hi Bob,

Hey, it looks terrific! I love the atmosphere, the darkening sky, etc. You can feel the dampness and smell the rain.

Robert- I love that painting. No wonder Greg picked you to do the cover on his next Triplane book. Or did Ray have something to do with it? With a couple of changes, a pretty good representation of what some people think F.I 102/17 might have been, too.

I too wanted to say how much i enjoy this piece, very moody and reflective(even to the red wheel covers in the puddles).i also wanted to say how much i appreciate that youo are trying scenes that are unusual for aviation art of WWI: your recent piece of a night-flying Be2 trying to struggle to find the Zeppelin was superb and again not the typical scene employed!
So, please keep up the nice artwork and the inventive scenes for us to enjoy!

I tend to shy away from anything red concerning Fokker Dr.I's but that is really nice! The contrast between the weather and the machine make the piece IMHO.

Thanks- and thanks also to Greg for his good words.
I imagine it was Ray who picked me for the book cover. My usual mode of operation is to sit around pondering my left thumb until an e-mail arrives, such as from Ray R. "Hey ya wanna do a triplane picture?"...ok- that's highly paraphrased, but the gist is true! That's how this one happened. Fat dumb and happy one morning minute, still fat and dumb, but happier after checking the morning's mail.
"Hey darlin'" I says to the wife. "I just got a cover gig from AlbProd....Fokker Triplane.......and the guy who's writing it is the one and only Greg VW!"
Then I take a nap.

Depending on a few factors, there may be a small print of this one. I haven't decided yet. I don't know what the market is for muddy tripes!

Thanks. There's a long hidden stash of my old work under the bed that only gets seen when the mattress if flipped or the furniture is moved- but I keep this stuff around to remind me of what not to do. These old panels remind me not to do so many airplanes merely stuck on bright blue skies- which was an early bad habit. I still do 'em that way from time to time, but learning from the other ways of presentation makes these even better than they might have been.

Hah! Yeah- I know what you mean. I think the last time I did anything involving Jasta 11 red and triplanes was most likely an old Aurora kit combined with a little glass bottle of Testors Red. I have avoided this combo until now and figured what the heck- I might as well get my MvR/Triplane obligations out of the way. Plus, that dark dreary background makes that red poke yer eye!
