There's a book with a picture much like you describe entitled Battle of Britain 1917: http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P...1.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

there's another entitled The Sky On fire - the first Battle of Britain 1917-1918: http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P...1.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

If either of these are what you're after, you might need to get hold of a copy to discover the identity of the artist.

Painting by Stan Stokes

The american aviation artist Stan Stokes has produced a painting called the First Battle of Britain, depicting the first daylight on London in 1917 by a group of Gotha heavy bombers being intercepted by a single Bristol F2B. However you mentioned the Gothas being intercepted by a pusher which the F2B isn't. Is that the painting you meant as it is quite a recent piece as Stokes painted it within the last five years or so. He has his own website and it is featured in the section on World war one aviation scenes. Stokes has a very precise, clean-cut and highly detailed style which may or may not appeal to you.

That Gotha painting of Stokes was the featured opening page in the 2003 "Bombs Away" calendar from RLM Productions. They may still have back issues at:
