very rare

it is very rare that a painting works so well in both landscape and portrait formats. i was looking at picture posted on page 10, http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...may042007d.jpg. you cropped it perfectly!

when you get to making prints (you are right?) you can sell a bunch of the landscape version too.

most definately, i was thinking that Leader's style is reminiscent of the Impressionists, in particular Edouard Manet, IMO. Leader, do you believe in re-incarnation?

not in my case. i think it's my first time here, but thanks for the undeserved comparison

okay. back from a two week florida vacation with my kids, it's time to make more progress on my commissioned paintings. not happy with the nieuport in the background of this painting, i'm going to paint over it, swapping it for a differerent type. this morning i made a rough pencil sketch from my favorite of the ten photos of moriane sauliniers sent to me by my wonderfully patient art patron.

this little thumbnail sketch will be the approximate actual size of the painted version. time to find my dreaded bifocals and magnifying glass again.

starting the aeroplane swap out in the background

1. say a last goodbye to the nieuport. boo hoo.

2. projecting the moraine over top of it.

2b. close-up of the projection over the painting:

3. gone with a few strokes of a wet oil mix of prussian green, burnt umber, alizaron crimson payne's grey and zinc white. (white specs are light reflections on wet paint):

4. if you look closely and past all the white light reflections off the wet canvas, you'll see the start of the moraine:

what NOT to do

don't carry your freshly-squirted oil palette on your dashboard when you are carrying your painting on the passenger seat floor...

http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...esseroops6.jpg

all's well that ends well. the paint splats were easily removable over the well-cured paint and they miraculously missed hitting the morane saulinier that i had put two more hours into today. whew!

Leader- Looking good. Those Moranes were certainly good looking and they built ~1000 of them, three times as many as the Fokker Dr.I.

glad you like it, taz. i'm going to add a bit more shading to the underside of wing and perhaps lighten up the brass behind it. make the shadow beneath it a bit darker to plant it better. it measures less than 3" on the canvas, so i'm using my two-hair paintbrush on it.
