Painting in Layers
AAC,
I'm not an artist and have no training in art...so I've found following the process of your work quite interesting!
Could you explain why you paint a picture in layers???? Silly me...I've always thought you grab some color, whisk the bush on canvas, and you're done.
Blue skies,
FliegerJG1

FliegerJG1, not in the case of going for accurate details for very particular aeroplane afficianados. Or like in the case of my "Evil Black Baron of Rhinebeck, where i painted every last hair in his mustache and beard. Hours of layering and detailing are necessary to get to the final stage. BUT, actually some of my better paintings have happened that way, by seemingly just whooshing the brush across the canvas - well sort of. Take for instance the 24 x 36" oil of a mother and her baby that i accomplished recently in a two-hour live modeled session - one of my best ever. It's on the opening page of my website: www.artworksinprogress.com
Thanks for asking FliegerJG1. Your continued interest is greatly appreciated!
More on the the layering process later when i've got a bit more time.

AAC - Very interesting and beautiful group of paintings on your website. Almost makes me want to take up painting again (as if I had the time). Good luck with the studio!

Hellcat and margaret,
thanks much! If you two ever get to the west coast, come to the little town of Locke on a Saturday morning and we'll throw some paint at some canvases together. You too, Flieg - we'll call it "aerodrome paint out day!" Might even see if we can get some of the aerodrome men to join us. Might even have to do a group mural with some aeroplanes in it.

took the cole canvas off the wall, and am having a friend with a wood shop make a frame to stretch the canvas over. we measured it today. stretched dimensions will be 39.5 x 51.5" he'll create a frame later once i've put the final touches on it. anyone know where to purchase good frame moulding without owning a frame shop?

My Cole Palen portrait is not quite done yet, as I am not happy with the way his feet look on the ground. To me, they just don't seem to settle in - almost looks like he's hovering a few inches above the grass. But then again, maybe he is....hm.
I also want to tone down the highlights a bit which should make the folds in his shirt and on his boots more realistic. And I need to do some more work on his right hand as well as his chin, which looks too prominent now.
Do you think I've got his pants too white?
