Thanks to all!
Thanks to you, Gary, and to those who have e-mailed me with your kind comments.
So as not to leave the matter hanging, this is the completed bust:
I apologize for the high sheen on the forehead: just the lightly-tinted linseed oil glaze doing its job.
Since my last posting, I have been busy with my first entirely original piece in this genre: a 1/8th scale bust of Hans Joachim Buddecke. The face is all-but-done, while the kalpak and tunic are beyond the half way points. All that remains as yet untouched are the insignia and decorations.
Thanks again!
Augie

Augie,
He turned out great!
Can't wait to see how the Baron turns out, and Buddecke.

On the bench. . .
Hi Rich!
Sorry for the delay in the response--it was one of those weeks!
As always, thanks for the kind words.
If I can ever set aside a block of time to spend with the camera, I will update the ip projects. I finished undercoating the MvR bust today, and hopefully the oils will follow in short order. Buddecke is progressing very nicely, and if not for the time issue, could probably be wrapped-up in a fortnight's time.
In anticipation of the completion of Buddecke, I have begun work on my second original: a 1/8th scale rendition of Lothar von Richthofen. So far, I am extremely pleased. As with "big brother", the eyes (and nose) will determine everything, and these still await.
Again, thanks!
Augie

What no overbite?
Hey Augie,
Interesting! While I don't agree with you about the lack of likeness or any resmemblance between this head and the Richthofen I did, (that is utter baloney as the two sculpts were done seperately in sculpey) you have missed out on the one very distinctive character in Udet's face: his massive overbite! In this respect it is every bit as prominent as on Buddecke, perhaps more-so. I think the Udet along with the Richthofen (okay, the Richthofen is bland in expression, but then he looks like that in most of his photos) were the best likenesses of the series. The Rickenbacker was particularly bad. I could not find a single profile shot which really frustrated me and ended up in a bad rendering. However, Udet's overbite is so massive that it is noticable even in frontal shots of his face.
Of course, this sculpt was done many years ago, early in my sculpting career. The nose looks a bit ridiculous now! Also, you have gone for a very different expression on yours. Having read Udet's book, I went more for the "happy-go-lucky" character that comes through so clearly in his writing. Udet was a lover of life, a party animal actually.
The befuddled warrior expression is also very interesting. But then we are talking apples and oranges here.......
Wail on McDuff!!
Cheers!!
Mike

Augie- I think your work on the bust is absolutely awesome. I knew you were an excellent historian, but had no idea you had such artistic talent, too. Bravo, my friend.
