Bill Thaw/Lafayette Escadrille color study
Here is a new one to the mix. Commissioned by a close relative of Bill Thaw, it depicts Thaw presenting the "new" Indian head logo to Thenault as Cpl Suchet looks on. No name as of yet.
This is the color study for the painting (which isn't started yet). It needs some changes before I commit to the larger canvas. Most notably the hangar in the background (and the Caudron within) needs to be moved to the right so that it doesn't come behind Thaw's head. His face will stand out more with the dark treeline behind it rather than the hangar.
i may move Thaw slightly to the left as well so that his hand and arm connect a little more with the Indian head. That would strengthen that line up to his face. I may glaze a little exhaust smoke into the background to subdue it a little. The client has also requested that the sky not look quite so "ominous".
For some reason, this one was a headache to color correct this morning, so what you see onscreen isn't quite "there" in relation to the real thing. We'll call it "pretty darn close", though. Doesn't really matter anyway as the colors will be tweaked again in the final version.

Wow.
Do I like this. Great lighting. (Is it over-cranked? sure - so what).
NICE.

It'll come to you.
The logo is not part of the compostition - it roars off the fuse disporportionate to else.
A tweak.

Suggestion: control depth of field so we stay in center of interest, which you know.

Well - clients are clients.
I love it but I ain't paying.
Sky is fine, in fact, if the Vacation Sky goes in there, competes with comp..

Don't let the client wreck your instincts, said the Art Detector who proceeded to do exactly that.
I like it, Russ, including the figure work.
Good to see this, home from the hunt.

Thanks Barker. You're right about the logo. It does need to be toned down.
The whole thing needs some more work. But I'm happy with where its going, otherwise I wouldn't have posted it.

the study is 11" x 15", oil on masonite. finished piece actually won't be too much larger than the study, at 16" x 22".
not really looking for suggestions. i know it needs some changes and have a pretty good idea of where those changes ned to be made.
