today's changes and progress
i worked long hours on this today, making several changes based mostly on a number of your good suggestions, all of you. thanks and keep the input coming.
this is still in the roughing it out stages, so no real details just yet. also haven't put the people in yet. but i know where they are going to go.
my palettes are a mess, but that's how i like 'em.
charles nunngesser waits paintently in the background for me to return to work on his aeroplanes some more.

made a huge change today
the background was still bugging me after working on it for several hours more today, so i got bold, took a deep breath and and completely changed it. here it is basically blocked in with the new composition. no details yet. i think this layout works much better, don't you agree? also, started blocking in the mechanic and pilot.
earlier today:
after blocking in a new background:

well done
That building wasn't working for me either.
it just didn't sit in space well
I think that roofline was the biggest problem - some very awkward angles.
this new comp looks much better

AAC,
Turning the entrance to the hanagar is a good idea. I wondered why you didn't do it before.
(On the following, please keep in mind I'm no expert and I realize you just put in many hours and a great deal of angst making the decisions you made, but,,,,,,,,,,,,,)
Does the hangar now seem a bit large??
Phil

right, mark. no matter where i moved it, i continued to parallell the wing line, competing with it. i tried fading the building, too, but it still bugged the heck out of me.

thanks. i agree. in the new version of the background, i think the placement of the dark, open hangar space very nicely simplifies the backdrop and frames 2/3rds of the fuselage. what do you think about the light geometric rectangular shape of the hangar door behind the light colored cowling? do you think it competes or do you think it compliments the aeroplane? i'm thinking of moving the line over a bit to the left (closing the hangar door a bit) to keep from drawing the line directly over the front N strut.

ha! cuz i didn't think of it til just yesterday. why didn't you say something before, phil??
actually, i had thought about it, and sketched it out a bit, but i thought that making the whole word "FOKKER" front and center would be too obvious, too competing of the subject and would draw a lot of rude laughter from uneducated teenagers.

well, yes, it is large, but i moved the D.VII closer to the hangar and the viewer closer to the D.VII. this should be the correct scaling based on that. i was worried that making the hangar much larger would diminish the D.VII, but it doesn't to my eye.

I like the new hangars much better AAC. The DVII and the hangars seem to all fit in the same space now.

AAC,
I'm just an old country boy and I would never want to upset you. I'm sure you will make a great painting in any case.
I just thought (to myself) ((sorry)) that maybe you had seen too many airplanes in front of too many hangars, so you put yours towards the side. Remember. the only brush I'm any good with these days is used to paint my house!
