Löwënhardt DVII Color Study
I've been wanting to tackle Löwenhardt's DVII for a while now. The easel is currently open as I've finished up my Lafayette Escadrille piece and am working on drawings for the Kurt Wolff piece, so I figured that I would go ahead and throw an aircraft portrait of the yellow DVII into the mix.
Löwenhardt!
oil on masonite
11" x 7"
final version will be 26" x 16"

Russ,
Looks very nice!
One note - I think it was discussed here before - considering the date of Löwenhardt's last flight (Aug 10), would the DVII have been a mid series variant (fewer louvres) possibly sans upper engine panels because of the mid summer heat, á la Udet's 4253/18?
Regardless, look forward to the finished piece!

Good question, Josef. I'll look into that before I begin the larger version.

it gives me a warm, happy feeling!
gorgeous, warm yellows, browns and beautiful reflectivity from the sun, russ.
perspective-wise, the landing gear looks a tad narrow and perhaps needs to me tweaked as a whole a bit to the left(?) i know it is narrow gear, but perhaps you've got it just a bit too narrow, compared to the size of the tail feathers??

oh, also, love your treatment of the lozenge - hinted, not mathematically rendered.

nope. its right. I gaurantee it and I can prove it . Keep in mind that this is a color study and not the final image. The perspective is worked out for a 26" wide painting, not a 5" wide onscreen image. the larger image means that the tail will appear larger in proportion to the rest of the aircraft.
Right off the top of my head I think the real viewing distance equates to something like 65'. thats how far away an actual DVII would have to look to appear 20-whatever inches wide on a canvas that is roughly 40" away from the viewer.

AAC, just to be fair I double checked the perspective. It is dead on. The only way it can be wrong is if the Windsock Datafile plan views are wrong, and I doubt that to be the case.

That one is (will be) entitled "Wolff's Requiem". it depicts the death of Kurt Wolff while flying MvR's 102/17. Both the color study and the final version have already been spoken for. I am hoping to have it finished by late april/early may-ish.
