Hi AAC- I think that Picaso is said that art is never finished and as I know he was never sure how it will finally look like. But for master as you are even the unfinished art is the masterpiece!!

AAC,
His nose looks a bit flattened out. I agree with Crankcase that you must have be channeling a bit of ole Elvis when you did that sneer!
I couldn't figure out what he was standing next to, the lower wing having braces to the top right at the wing tip. My gut was saying a Caudron but the cowling isn't right. You'v got the photo blocked by your painting, so I checked out this site;
http://avia.russian.ee/air/france/caudron_g-3.php
It's hard to tell. FYI here is some info on the mounts that Ball flew;

Rare collar badge that Miz - 7th (Robin Hood) Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment).
Here's the best I could find. It was worn in Silver or Bronze; and judging from the picture, I'd say silver in this case.
The buttons are the 'strung bugle' for a Rifles regiment and were black horn.
Best wishes,
GT.

Martha,
I'm thinking I was right (it happens now and again!)
Take a look at the first photo off this link; http://www.answers.com/albert%20ball

great, but what clues from the photo tell you it was silver, not bronze?

black horn? is that the type of metal? or the type of strung bugle that is depicted?

Hi AAC
Simply the contrast, as the bronze is very subdued. Below is an original tunic with bronze collars. Nothwithstanding arguments elsewhere about what colours look like in B&W, the difference is plain. Also: looking in the texts, it would seem that this Robin Hood collar was (should have) only been worn by officers in silver (solid, plate or 'white metal').

Sorry for the confusion - the buttons were made from moulded/ pressed (cow?) horn, stained/ dyed black. Black coloured insignia was/ is a uniform distinction of 'rifle' regiments.
Best wishes,
GT.
