Fokker Triplane: Ver. 2.0

Heya one and all and welcome.

Today I have started a project I have wanted to do for a while and I am pretty anxious to get this one going. There is so much more I could have done to my old model but my skills at the time were not quite where they are today. When I packaged up my old model for DF's I really was disappointed with it....compared to the work I had been doing recently.. I just had to re do this one. New maps, materials...new everything..

So here is where I will start. The wings. I have never started with them but what the hell. With the wings I will work out a few other issues as well...like new maps and shaders and render set up. Then from there I can take the results and apply them to the rest of the model before the meshes get overwhelming. This will hopefully save me a lot of time in the end.

Also for this project the maps will get redone....like 3 times the size too. Oh, and I will be mapping and texturing as I go. I want to see if its easier to do it that way. I usually wait till the whole model is complete but I want to try to streamline my work flow. So well shall see how it comes out.

Here is what I have so far:

I will do both FI and Dr.I parts. This is one thing I didnt really do before. And I want to add much more detail this time around.

One thing that bugged me about the old model were all the hard edges...it looked too hard...it should appear softer... maybe you can see what i mean.. You can also see the difference between the strut brackets.

What I would like to ask from everyone one here is "What would you like to see done with this triplane model?" Not matter how trivial or monumental...I would love to hear what you have to say.

Next up:
Mapping the wings and new streaky green paint. Thoughts on color would be appreciated...as in standard finish.. No Voss debates please...

Thanks everyone,

Thanks everyone,

Tim,

Looks fine right now - but then again I'm partial to the F.I and Dr.I -

Voss' final crash scene?
Voss' dogfight with 9 S.E.5s circling in twilight.
Voss' guns blazzing as he turns into Mac and the boys.
Voss' shooting down his last victory

Tom,

Actually, now that I by chance of course, I have a set of Se's and 56 sqn maps already done, you can be sure that there will be some scenes from that epic fight.

About crashed planes...maybe. I have thought of rigging the mesh to give the linen...crumple zones so to spkeak. I could then crunch it how ever I wanted. I think it might be more fun to have the DrI on its nose due to a landing mishap. That would eliminate the whole " What to do with the body" question, that no doubt would be a factor to the composition of the scene.

Currently I am working on streaky green paint and hopefully I end up with something I like. What is important is that I use a method that I can easily reproduce and is simple enough to do on the fly.

In the mean time I was wondering if anyone had a nice photo showing the underside of the axle wing. Replicas would be ok but period photos would be better. Was there a seam and would it have been similar to the DVII? I think last time around somebody mentioned that it was one piece....LOL I can't remember.

Ohhh and images of the leading edges of the wings would be helpful as well. I still think that rib tape may have been used to tack the linen down. Also stacking pad photos would be great too.

Ok, more later....

Hi Tim:

Try this link to another tread on Fokker axles, it has some pic's that might help.

Fokker axle wings.

I have seen really nice closeup of the stacking pad that Dave Watts has (look him up in the members list). You can try PM him to see if he can send a copy to you.

How about a Jasta on the ground with all engines going, about to take off or just took off with the Jasta's tent in the background...

Lloyd,
Thats perfect...I was unaware of those threads. Exactly what I was looking for. I would love to see the rest of the Dr.I 198/17 that Terry posted.

The site is slow right now so I am still reading one of thhe threads. Again perfect. Thanks

Tim, the wings look really good! What's your construction technique for the version 2 models? Are they built up from an outline and individual rib profiles, or do you start with a slab and sub-d model the concavities?

Tim,
Just to help out, Voss was flying a F.I not a Dr.I and it landed upside down so you really don't have to worry about the pilot. Apparently, the lower wing and the wing axel and the underside from the fuselage with the tail out of the mud was all that was discernable. The underside of the engine with a bit of cowling all crumpled in the earth. Pleanty of shell holes around the crash site with water in them, (is where Voss was buried later) the flattened out top, middle and lower wing, broken struts and all , and you have it.

hey Tim
well, I thought Version 1 looked pretty darn good.
but, I have found that reworking an old project can be a very gratifying experience.

personaly, i think you should focus on your maps.
if you think it might be helpful, i could send the .psd file that i made for the fokker streaky camo for the DVII.
not that my interpretation is definitive by any means.
amd to tell you the truth, I wasn't entirely satisfied with it.
I used some rust streaks on plate metal to give me the basic "streakyness"
which got me by...but It didn't give me the grain of the fabric
which I think might be pretty important for a dry brush technique like this.

have fun with it
