Considering the flamboyance of her news I'd guess she was blond and was certain that she had to pay a mechanic to change the oil in her car's headlamps once a month.
I'd be taken by surprise, assess the situation and thank her for her passion. Then I would simply state that I would make a concession this once just for her and advise her from there about copyright law. If she suddenly came around and remembered my rights (and it seemed genuine) no fault, no foul. Whatever her reaction, she is now aware. Then I would have her sign a receipt for the total number of copies she claims she made which holds her to only those by my permission.

yesterday, i was sitting outside on the sidewalk of the little tourist town where i live, painting a picture of the scene in front of me. i hear a camera click behind my back. i turn around and there's a guy standing right behind me zooming in on my painting with his mega lens.
i say to him, "um, i'm sorry, but i don't like people taking photographs of my paintings without my permission. copyright thing, ya know."
him: " but i'm from michigan."
me: "okay? so?"
him: (focusing in again for another pic) "nobody's ever going to see it."
me: "as far as i'm aware, the internet has far-reaching capabilities. and if you like my painting so much, i'd prefer you buy it from me."
him: (finally lowers his camera) "well, your loss, lady. how are you ever going to become famous?"

ludwig,
yes, i'm getting bolder about stopping tourists from snapping pics of my paintings. every tourist here has a camera and they take pics of everything. have even found them focusing in through my livingroom windows a couple of times.
i'm laughing about the guy, yesterday, too. i'm still trying to figure out what being from michigan had to do with anything and how he planned to make me famous if "nobody was going to see it."
i've been thinking of making an 8 x 10" sign that says something like this...
"For just $25 you may take a photo of one of my selected paintings with your camera or cell phone. Price includes my signed copyright release for you to make one printer copy or have one professional giclee print made that you may hang in your home for your own personal enjoyment.
For just $100 more, you will receive my signed copyright permission to distribute the image through e-mails, websites, blogs, cd's or other digital storage devices."
For just $1000 more, you will receive my signed copyright permission for you to use the image for commercial purposes. This includes putting the image into slide shows, cd's, books, school or business reports, research documents, brochures, newspapers, magazines, internet websites that sell things, t-shirts, calendars, coffee mugs, and a few other items."
editorial suggestions anyone?
