What about profiles???

Hi,

I was hoping to get a feel for what people like and dislike in aviation profile art. Do you like plain jane or fancy angles, shadows or not....clean or gritty ..ect...ect.

Thanks for your input.

I like the profile art and style of Jim Laurier http://www.jimlaurier.com/digital/yaeger.jpg

He also did some of the Osprey book profile work. The ones on the B25 were excellent.

It does not matter did the people like or not color profiles- they are very important no matter is it for web site, book or magazine. A lot of my financial income is from my color profiles. Buit this type of art are of more technical nature as well it use as base technical drawings for later layers of colors. Even more- perspective is not allowed there. There is from time to time some effort to add perspective but it never get into wide use.

About the same color profile there is two way in create it. one and most widely used is the vector based graphic and most used software is the Corel Draw and Adobe Illustrator. This method as result have plain colors areas with the just few add in the shadows. Other method is called full color art and for this is most widely used Adobe Photoshop and very rare Corel Photo Paint.

There is almost fierce antagonisam among the users of this two types of method of work. As I know vector method of work are in general used by those who are not much skilled in the true art and have no sense for this.

Also this give influence into the price of this type of art. Vector art cost some 5 to 10 USD per color profile while the full color art cost at least three times more. If you want to make real realistic work, with details close to the real airplane full color art is the only answer and there is no problem with price.

Tim- hope that I have answer on your interest in this subject and hope more people will give their input there.

By the way- I sell my art but I kindly provide also some free download for personal use. here you are and enjoy

3-views

As a modelbuilder, my only comment is that profiles are nice... but three-views are better!

Best regards,

Thanks all now we are geting somehwere!

Dean in Omaha, besides 3 views......which are always nice but what about a profile series in a "walk around" format.....maybe?

I am hoping to produce a inovative way to do profiles but not be too crafty so as to ruin the whole purpose of the plates. Which is to be used as guide for modelers and sim geeks alike.

More please!

Well one thing for sure is that I dont want to do flat looking profiles. Thats boring. Interesting profiles you have by the way. I like the addition of the pilot. Nice touch!

Well- you are going to make project. I am curious to know more if it is not problem. I have also some idea for the close future and my principal goal is the European market.

Thank you for compliments. I hear that they are very high rated in 2D world. But 3D art is the future and keep on that way. Your work is very interesting and inspirative.

I like profiles which also show some artistic value. By that I mean highlights and shadows which help to understand the form and showing a certain love and care about the subject.

Examples of what I like would be Mr. Dempseys work for the Leaman Fokker Triplane book. Also like the artwork of the WW2 Jagdwaffe series by Mr Tullis.

I would certainly like to see supplemental angles or detail zooms sometimes.
