Thanks, Rainbase. If I'm not mistaken that's another superb painting by the late Brian Knight.

Please add my respects to the accolades for George Evan's aviation art tour-de-forces. His Two-Fisted Tales are mainly what hooked me on the "GW FORCE". Why doesn't someone get together with his family - the comic company and do a picture book of his aviation masterpieces?? FM

The superb cover from this book is from Barry Weekley: Ltn Kurt Monnington of Jasta 18 intercepting DH9s of 104 Squadron on 23 October 1918.

This very fine cover painting is from Joe Keogan. It pictures an attack (20 May 1917) of Feldwebel Karl Kaszala in 28.11 (foreground) and Hauptmann Godwin Brumowski in 28.10 (background), both of Flik 41/J on a SPAD 11 two-seater with French cockades over Monte Santo.

The last one is a cover from John Blake depicting Albatros D.IIIs and D.Vs of Jasta 12 in September 1917.

Winged Victory, Winged Victor

Bonjour mes amis

The greatest of the Great War aviation novels remains Winged Victory, by Victor M. Yeates who flew in combat with 46 Squadron and 80 Squadron, a remarkable book by any standard.

Among the numerous editions, this of 1961, published by Johnathan Cape with a cover design by (which may not mean that the art was by the same) R.G. Williamson -

Highslide JS

Gordon F. Atkin wrote an excellent biography of the man which was published in 2004 by Springwater Books with cover artwork by Les Carter described as "depicting Victor Yeates flying Sopwith Camel D6585 in May 1918".

Yeates is always worthy of consideration and I will open Winged Victory again now ...

Salut!
Kirk
