Kirk,
Thanks. It's a bunch of fun, especially when you find something that you've been looking for for a long time. Or when you discover a book you didn't know existed.
My problem now with the covers is that I have to go back to make sure I'm not reposting something. I actually wrote out a list of the books that have been posted so it's easier to check. Quite a few covers so far.
And more to come ...
Dan

Her are several more, but I don't know who made the covers.

Hi Jos,
The painting seen on the cover of the edition of Peter Kilduff's "The Red Baron" that you posted is a detail from a work by RAF artist Clayton Knight. Peter knew Clayton Knight and was a good friend, and if I'm not mistaken he actually owns the original piece.

Greg and everyone else,
Yes, the artwork is by the late Clayton Knight (1891-1969), an American who flew with Nos. 44 and 206 Squadrons, RAF, in WW I, and who I had the pleasure of getting to know. Alas, I do not own the original -- the U.S. Air Force Art Collection does. I was delighted to receive permission to have it used on the cover of one of my books.

Thanks for the correction, Peter. I'm glad that piece is in the good hands of the Air Force Art Collection, if not in yours!
And by the way, Dan, yes - the cover of HITEB is by Joe Michie.

Hello Greg and Peter,
Thanks for your info on The Red Baron.
Here is another beautiful cover ( Marseille of the Air) from Mike O'Neal.
This fine one is from Barry Weekley.

Thanks for posting those, Jos! Mike O'Neal's work is always worthy of another close look.
Here is George Evans' cover for Aces High No. 3, in a reprint edition. Another balloon busting scene. Note how the pilot of the Nieuport cranes his head over the side - just so George could add the human element to the cover scene.:

I'm approaching the Aces High series a bit backwards. Here is George's eye-catching cover for the very first issue, one of EC Comics' "New Direction" line:
I can't help but wonder of George wasn't perhaps a bit inspired by this dramatic painting by Rudolph Belarski. It appeared on the cover of one of the 1930's pulp magazines, but I don't know which one. This is the original art:
