Artwork on Haupt Heydemarck book jackets

Hi Greg,

Thanks so much for posting these interesting art examples. To add to your last comment: the cover art for Flying Section 17 and War Flying in Macedonia were done by Howard Leigh. The cover art for the edition of Double Decker C.666 shown was signed by Döbrich Steglitz. That inclines me to believe that the artist's name was "Döbrich" and he lived (or worked) in Steglitz, which, if memory serves me, was in Silesia.

Hi Peter,

Thanks so much for correcting me. I thought the artwork for Double Decker C.666 looked different (more Germanic in style!) than the other two Heydemarck books. I guess I assumed it was also Leigh, or the website from which those came may have mistakenly stated it was Leigh. At any rate, I have corrected my earlier post.

Wonderful books, all of them.

Greg

Here's another Elliot White Springs book, which has a cover with a detail from a painting by Clayton Knight. What a team these two were! In the compilation book of Knight's art entitled Pilot's Luck this painting is called "The Top Man Wins".

Correction re: Steglitz-Zehlendorf

Greg,

Now it's my turn to make a correction. Since my last posting Ive learned that "Steglitz," if it was the artist's area of residence, refers to the borough of Steglitz-Zehlendorf in south-west Berlin (Germany) and not a location in Silesia, which once hosted communities with similar names.

New Cover

Here is a new book/ new cover to review: it is the new book by Jack Hunter( who also wrote The Blue Max):: i have already finished the book and would tell you i think it rivals TBM, the story is a page turner and quite enjoyable. Mr Hunter has produced another great book!
He also was the artist who drew the two aircraft seen- i can recommend the book to all!

Greg,

Thanks. The cover art for One Man's War isn't signed, but looked to me to be by the same artist who did about half the interior illustrations of the book, but only signed LB. I was going to post and ask. I'll have to take some more pictures...

First of all, thatnks to everyone who has helped keep this thread going. I've zoned out of the Aerodrome for a while due to work, but it's nice to see things chugging right along.

Here's a couple, since it's been a few days without a picture. The first isn't "really" a book, but I wanted to make people aware, if they weren't already, of another fine journal. The '14-18 Journal out of Australia publishes once per year. Membership gets you the journal, plus four quarterly newsletters. It's worth the price - about US$30 per year.

cover by Vic Sheppard

This one I can't read the artist name, but it's right there on the cover. I can provide a higher quality scan of the sig if anyone really wants...

Merv Corning

Hi Dan,

I'm sure that the cover painting to "The Sky on Fire" is a detail from one of the classic paintings by Merv Corning. He did a whole series for Leach Corporation back circa the late 1950's/early 60's. I believe the series was called the "Heritage of the Air" series.
