Fiction and near-fiction

Thomson Burtis was a prolific writer of WWI aviation fiction for young readers. Arch Whitehouse....well, we all know about him. I cannot find the artists of these covers either.

J. Railton Holden also wrote many novels of the air war published in England from 1934 to 38. This one is apparently about the RFC against the Turks.

Hello guys,

Here is the cover of the Dutch version of Double-Decker C666 by Hauptmann Heydemarck.

Notice that on this cover he is "only" a Lieutenant and not a Hauptmann (captain).

Does anyone know in what year Heydemarck wrote Double Decker C666?
On page 2 in this book the year 1917 is mentioned.
Remarkable is for instance that the first chapter in the English version is not in this Dutch version. Also the last chapter "I had a comrade" is not in this one.
Why were they left out?

Hi Jos,

Well, my dog-eared copy of the paperback version:

Has a copyright date of 1916, by August Scherl, GmbH, Berlin. It was also published in the same year by G.G. Haupt. Note that on this original Heydemarck's rank is given as Oberleutnant. From what I can figure, all his other books were written in the 1930's, when his rank was given as Hauptmann. The Engliah translation of Double-decker C.666 by Sykes was first published by John Hamilton in 1931. That was followed by Flying Section 17 in 1934 and War Flying in Macedonia in 1935.

I don't know why the Dutch version was abridged. Here are the chapters in my paprerback 1916 edition:

Vorwort
Fernaufklärung
Durch die Wolken
Bomben auf Bahnhof Avocourt
Minus 30 degrees
Gehetzt
Nachtflug
Bange Minuten
Und doch!
Motorpanne
In den Nebel hinein
Der letzte Flug von "C 666"

As you can see if you compare the English translation by Sykes, it would seem some of the material had been moved around and edited into more chapters than in the German original. It would be more of a task than I'm willing to take on right now to try to compare the English version with the German and see how things were re-arranged.

Hope that helps.

Greg

Here's Planes of the Great War, 1936, which collected 50 etchings by Howard Leigh in one volume, with a foreword by Capt. W.E. Johns.

Here's more cover art by Howard Leigh. The book is Thrilling Flights, an anthology edited by, you guessed it, Capt. W.E. Johns.:

Greg,
Thanks for your reply.

I compared the chapters from your paperback with mine and I think we have the "same" book. Mine is a translation of the 1916 book you have.

Vorwort - Een woord vooraf
Fernaufklärung - Verkenning op grooten afstand
Durch die Wolken - Door de wolken
Bomben auf Bahnhof Avocourt - Bommen op het station Yvocourt
Minus 30 degrees - Dertig graden onder nul
Gehetzt - Nagezeten
Nachtflug - Nachtelijke vlucht
Bange Minuten - Bange oogenblikken
Und doch! - Eind goed, al goed
Motorpanne - Motorpanne
In den Nebel hinein - In den mist
Der letzte Flug von "C 666" - De laatste vlucht van de "C 666"

Could it be that Heydemarck wrote his 1916 version, before the death of Take Engmann? Engmann died on 10 December 1916. Maybe he had not been able to write the last chapter "I had a comrade" and put it in the 1916 version.

Greg, as you have the origanal version, and my Dutch (1917) version is a correct translation, I think you are right. In the English version a lot has been moved around, etc.
I think he "upgraded" his story in the 1931 and added the last chapter "I had a comrade" to honour his "Emil".

Thanks again.

It is nice to see different aircraft than the usual in "Morning Class." Fokker E class and Albatros D class planes are common, but we rarely see artwork of Halberstadt and Fokker D class planes.

Hi,

"Morning Class" is, of course, intended to show Oswald Boelcke leading two of his Jasta 2 fledglings on a morning 'learning patrol' before the arrival of the Albatros D.I's at the Staffel.
