The drawing is by Karl Mühlmeister. This book (36 pages) had the dubious distinction to appear on the list of ' Liste der auszusondernden Literatur' of the Ministerium für Volksbildung der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik (1953). Look here.
One wonders what was so special about this booklet that it was forbidden to read in the DDR.

Very interesting, Jos! According to my Noffsinger bibliography, this is "an account about Max Mueller, the German ace." Of course, Mueller never flew the Fokker E.V, but who cared about a thing like that in 1939?
According to what Alex Imrie told me some time ago, Hubert Zuerl was the brother of Walter Zuerl, the author of the seminal book Pour le mérite Flieger, published in 1938 by Verlag Curt Pechstein, München. It is considered an indispensable work on the topic. Even before that book was published, however, both Walter and Hubert regularly contributed biographical articles on the "Blue Max" winners to the German WWI veterans' magazine, Der Frontsoldat erzählt.
Having been published in 1939, even if it deals mostly with Mueller (who was killed in WWI), this book may have contained a foreword or other glowing accounts by/about a certain obese high-ranking Nazi official....or other Nazis considered taboo for young readers in the DDR. Just a thought.

El Baron Rojo
Hi,
I don't know who drew this cover, either. This is for a Mexican comic book Hombres y Heroes, that I discovered on ebay:
First time I've ever seen the Rittmeister in a smashing powder blue Uhlan tunic with black facings. And who knows what he's going to do with that revolver? Certainly not shoot the lovely lady!

Karl Mühlmeister (1876-1943/1945) was a talented German children book illustrator, look for instance here. He has not done much illustrating for aviation items, but there is one of the Graf Zeppelin

Bonjour Greg!
Quite the illustration!
What will be done? Well, the Fokker Dr.I is straining for altitude and the revolver is being handled. Perhaps leave can be obtained to travel to Austria-Hungary, specifically, to Vienna to confer with a Dr. Freud ...
What is the content that issue of Hombres y Héroes? ... suspect that the narrative may be lacking in accuracy, but, wonder as to the illustrations ...
Salut!
Kirk

hhmm ... interesting Greg.
Unlike El Barón Rojo, neither Guynemer or Rickenbacker attract female attention. To make matters perplexing, based on the marking depicted on the aircraft illustrated for the two airmen, Guynemer flies for Britain and Rickenbacker flies for France! It would be interesting to see what constitutes the "GREAT DRAWS" advertised though ...
Thank you for bringing attention to those unusual publications.
Salut mon ami!
Kirk
