WWI Aviation books cover art

All,

There was a recent thread in the book section that included a number of posts of WWI aviation cover art. That thread (Fictional Novels of the Great War in the Air (a list)) has become inactive, but I thought there might be some interest in posting more cover images here.

I'll start:

Hi Dan,

Never heard of Mountain Eagles, Four Aces or Squadron 44. Worth buying?

Good to see again some of the fine retro design.

Some of those are really actually nice. There was a similar thread posted on ehangar a couple of years ago that discussed cover artwork (although not specific to WW1). Really neat to see some of the different styles. It makes me curious as to who painted them.

Hi Russ:

Are you and or Mike going to ORA for the artist weekend on the 26-27?

I'm have to Chicapee, Ma soon and I'm trying my best to be there for that weekend.

Hi Dan:

It was seeing Snoopy and the Red Baron that got me into aviation when I was 5 years old.

Um, I'm not planning on it, and I think it's pretty safe to say that Mike won't be attending either.

A shame. I miss artist weekend at ORA.

spad - It's been a while since I've read any of them - Arch Whitehouse spins a good yarn. I'll take a look at the others over the weekend.

Russ - I'll look at the actual books for some artist names and get back with any I find.

Here's some off non-fiction books:

More to come.

Great Thread

Hi All,

Great idea for a thread, Dan! The covers to Peter Saxon's Trilogy (the Unfeeling, Enemy, and the Warring Sky) were all done by the great, late Brian Knight. Besides being very accurate and beautiful paintings, the nice thing about them is that they are all 'waraparound' paintings which extended over the spine and on to the back cover. I wish I could find some unspoiled pristine versions of them, without the spine and all the type. Anyway, here's the cover for the third book in the trilogy about "Frank Thompson, RFC" in which his "M" Squadron flies SE5a's against Gothas bombing England. I can hardly remember ever reading the books - I just bought them for the cover art!

Some artist information:

Squadron 44 appears to be signed "Schaap" but I'm not sure on the p.

The Unfeeling Sky is indeed Brian Knight - the image continues on the back - I'll get a better pic later.

A Killing for the Hawks is by Valigursky.

Australian Air Aces appears to be signed but I can't make it out. Can scan close if anyone really wants to know. The back of the book also has art - will post later.

Fighting the Flying Circus is signed GH

Aeroplane Construction and Assembly is signed Cuthbertson.

Contact is signed Tom Eaglin.

Hal Siegel credited with jacket design for Goshawk Squadron.

Can't find the Munson.

Rest have no information I can find.
