Tom.
As far as I know, Jack's 8 drawings of the Voss fight were probably done for Charles Donald, and all 8 have never been published. As you know, three were published in Paul Leaman's "Fokker Dr.I Triplane: A World War I Legend."
I believe Jack is still alive, though of advanced years. He is a really terrific fellow and an amazing draftsman; Sadly, I've not heard from him in years.

I will PM you Jack,s last address that i know, it has been a couple of years since we last wrote each other: but i would imagine he is still there. As Greg said , he is a wonderful fellow an d he sent me copies of almost all his b/w work so that i could use it in my book : iwould imagine he would love to have you use his pieces in your book, if that is your thought process.
How goes the book? Will you use the sketch / portrait of Voss i sent you? You must have loads of material ready !

Mate,
That would be lovely. I readly await the PM with his address so that I may contact him and ask for his permission to publish all 8 in my new book.
As for the book itself, it is coming along smartly and contains a lot more stuff than I had originally anticipated. The Sketch of Voss will either be on the cover, but most definately in the book under a special chapter with all the other great artists that have given their permission to use their life work in the book.
I think that it will tantalize a lot of people, as to what I have been able to uncover in the last couple of years.

P.S. the books title will be "Ltn. Werner Voss and the pilots of Jasta 10" tc

Yet another very early version
Hi All,
I found this rendering by (I believe) artist Paul Bissell, in a bunch of clippings from the old pulp WWI magazines I picked up on ebay. I'm pretty sure it came from Flying Aces in the 1930's, but I can't be sure of the exact issue.
For awhile, every issue featured a front cover painting by Bissell of some supposedly true event, with a matching one-page story in the issue by Bissell describing the action. Of course, we must judge this as a product of its time and genre; at least the artist got SE 5's and a Fokker Tripe in the picture (as well as the odd 'Camel'). Many of his other paintings feature incorrect a/c types - but he did the best he could with the sources available. The colors of the British planes are fairly muted, compared to some paintings of the day. I'm not sure how he determined that Rhys Davids was the "War's Youngest Ace" (he certainly wasn't), but it made for good copy. Once again, the 'Checkerboard Ace Voss" myth rears its head.
Just thought you'd like to see this.
Greg

Harry Schaare
Hi,
Here is part of Harry Schaare's illustration for William E. Barrett's article "Even Greater than Richthofen," in the July 1959 issue of Cavalier.
Schaare is still alive (I believe, he would be 86) and was one of the most prolific artists of his day, doing paperback covers and tons of magazine illustrations. He did more than one of Cavalier's series of biographical articles on WWI aces, along with Phil Ronfor. He was a pretty accurate artist for the time, and knows a thing or two about WWI aircraft; note that he got the serial number and basic look of Voss' triplane right, and even had read McCudden's book and put the big "G" on his SE5a. Schaare also illustrated a children's book about Richthofen.

Yes, I very much did like to see that!
Someone should build a series of kits tracing the (believed) different versions of FI/103/17 ... that would be quite a display!
Salut!
