Mes amis
Greg and I made mention of artist Wilf Hardy on the thread about illustrations of the Barker Snipe combination so ... why not include the artist's rendition of the final combat of Werner Voss here which was published in Look and Learn as part of a history of The Great War?
Salut!
Kirk

Bonjour!
Correct Tom, but, we would be posting many fewer images if accuracy were essential in the case of this thread. Actually, I find the evolutionary progression of the artists' vision most interesting. Can you imagine someone having once said ... "So and so knows nothing! ... no checkerboard pattern on that aircraft of Voss!"
Salut mon ami!

Mate,
I agree, but we still on this site try to point out what is accurate and what is not. - Agree!

Speaking of innacurate depictions...
Hi,
Well, for Kirk, Tom and everyone else interested in the "historiography" surrounding the impression and images of Voss' last flight in the years since it happened: here is yet another illustration of the well-known "Checkerboard Ace" (sic) Werner Voss' Triplane from an old pulp magazine. This too, I believe, came from "Flying Aces" magazine sometime in the 1930's, but I cannot be sure as all I have is a clipping. It was one of a series of sketches by artist C.B Mayshark, entitled "How the Aces Went West." I have one other one in the series: Captain Albert Ball, V.C. It repudiates the idea that Lothar von R shot down Ball, but presents the "substantiated version" that Ball was shot down by a German machine gun crew in a church tower .
Anyway, in the interest of nostalgia, here's Voss in his checkerboard (sic) tripe:

The Checkerboard Ace strikes again!
Hi All,
Mention has been made of the marvelous work by the late artist George Evans, who did several terrific WWI aviation stories back in the '50's for the famous EC line of comic books, including Two-Fisted Tales, Frontline Combat, and of course the legendary Aces High which he inspired and edited to some extent.
In the November 1953 issue (No. 15) of Frontline Combat, George wrote and illustrated a 7-page story entitled "McCudden!". In his wonderful style he told the story of the Voss battle as only George could. He continued to stick to the "checkerboard ace" concept (sic) which had been so prevalent in the pulp mags (he had read the pulps voraciously and even illustrated a few), yet he also managed to include an accurate glimpse of the facial markings on Voss' F.I. I only have a black/white reprint of these old comic stories, but that's a better way to see George's work than in the old colored comics anyway. Here's part of George's take on the Voss combat:

Hi Greg:
Boy, you have a lot of resources...Now you know by posting this someone out there is going to see this and make it a point that this was a real color scheme. I can see it now, I show up at Dayton next year and there it is, a checkered trip.
Interesting take in the artwork, I do like some of the detail he did put it to it. Thanks for sharing.
Lloyd...

Mates,
These pic's from the comic book era' are really, really great. I almost forgot about them and sadly enough they are sometimes dismissed, but the reality of it is, the folks that drew them had to do at least some research for folks to buy them.
Many thanks Greg for sharing. Keep those cards and letters coming. Also Greg received your package and was almost totally speechless with what it contained. Thanks again.

Comics are one of the best art ever made!! This is great to know for this. I see that you are all very informed in subject but still miss answer about how many digital arts are made about Voss?
Cheers
