Inspiration and the Forum

Reading the thread about the paintings of Voss's last fight, with all the great, insightful comments from the artists themselves, gave me pause for thought about my own artistic attempts in previous years. Long story short, early last year, in a fit of artistic angst or maybe just disgust, I destroyed all save one of the WW 1 aviation paintings I was working on. Actually, I think I just got frustrated at not being able to properly translate my mental image of the "scenes" as I thought they should be to canvas or board. For reasons unknown (some attachment, perhaps, since I painted it from a photo I took when I visted the old Musee de l'Air in Paris many years ago) I went ahead and stuck the one remaining painting on the wall, where it's beenf or months, receiving only the occasional glance. Reading the Voss thread, and seeing those beautful paintings, has made me take a closer look at my own painting, maybe with an eye towards finishing it and starting again on the others. Thanks to Pete Hill and Russell Smith for the inspiration.
Chuck

My Gallery
A good start there, Chuck. I really like the soft color in the clouds.

Get used to that. It never goes away. we all have that problem. It always looks better in our heads.

Thanks Sreiko and Russell - Absolutely! Really, it's only a little paint and canvas. The ideas are still there. Once in a while, you have to get the old stuff out of the way to move on. Take a fresh look.

Still, I think anyone who paints, professional or amateur, probably understands what kind of weight these "creations" possess. I for one, will hang on to a painting too long, spend way too much time trying to fix a problem - to the point of ruining the thing! In that case, at least for me, it's always better to start over. I think that's why I've kept the DH-9 painting in the attachment. I've been a little more careful with it than the others - tried not to over-work it. Anyway, as I said, the Voss thread has made me look at it again - hopefully with a fresh eye. We'll see how it goes.
