Udet's Albatros
one of 'em, anyway...
This is a value study/prep drawing for an upcoming painting. It features Udet's Albatros D'4476/17. Pencil on vellum.

Russ,
Great start, as usual.
One thing that will probably go away as you put the color on the work. Did you notice that the stripes on the underside of the stabilizer, on the pilot's left side, make it seem like it is drooping?? Probably just my eyes, but I thought it worth mentioning.
I am very interested in seeing how you put color to this a/c as Udet is to me, a charming but ultimately tragic personality.
Phil

the first two stripes at the front are a little irregular. those can be easily fixed. it doesn't help your eyes, either, that I've got the elevator raised just slightly. Kind of give those stripes a odd bend.

Russ,
Overall it's great, but the lower wing shadow bothers me. I could be wrong, but it seems too dark and too sharply defined to me, especially the struts and wires. Would they cast dark, sharply defined shadows 10 feet away? Also, even though there is a gap, I would expect the trailing edge of the shadow to nearly meet the trailing edge of the wing.
You are the one that studies light and shadows for a living, so don't be afraid to tell me that I am totally off base. I look forward to seeing the finished painting.
