Another new study - Fokker DVII

Here's another new one. This is Fokker DVII 8609/18. This one never saw service. It was seized directly from the OAW factory by the AEF and spent its life as a war prize in Canada. The serial number had not been applied yet, but had been written in chalk on the side of the fuselage. The fuselage and rudder crosses had not been applied yet either. It carried no guns, had a small SE5 type windscreen and pitot tube attached to the upper wing.

Thumbs up

VERY NICE RUSSELL; What is the reason for this work - prep for a full-color oil piece - fun and practice - a commission - a new selection to offer in the pencil series? Its very dynamic and striking. FM

Yes (or, at least the full-color oil piece is a commission)

Russ,

How great is this drawing! Looks super.

Would this be the Knowleton (sp?) DVII that people talk about here??

Phil

Phil,

8609/18 actually came to Canada in the same batch of war trophies as the 'Knowlton Fokker', but it is not the same machine. The aircraft in Knowlton is Fok. D.VII (Alb) 6810/18.

Cheers,

Thanks Phil. No, but that will be included in the painting.

Russell,

I must add my two cents (and then some ) to this one. It truly is a superb looking study.

another one to go with it.

Here is the next DVII for this painting. This particular DVII was also a Canadian war prize and was used by William Barker in the Toronto/NY air race of 1919. It was a factory-fresh OAW DVII bearing the standard OAW markings. The top cowl was removed, a spare tire had been tied to to the port undercarriage and a large white "50" had been painted on the fuselage.

And the two birds as they will look in relation to each other in the final painting:
