New Color Study - Udet's Albatros

This, of course, is a progression of the project that I posted a few weeks ago featuring the same aircraft (Udet's Albatros). This piece is simply meant to be an aircraft portrait of Ernst Udet's Albatros DV, #4476/17. He flew this bird in late summer/early fall 0f 1917 while with Jasta 37. It featured a varnished plywood fuselage, 5 color lozenge on the wings and rudder, a black and white striped horizontal stabilizer and his usual "LO" emblem on the side.

The landscape is based on the village of Phalempin, where J37 was based during the period.

I've got a few small compositional changes that I need to make before starting the final version, as well as a couple of tweaks to the lines of the aircraft, but what you see here is basically how the finished piece will look.

Beautiful, Russ! I love the play of the light along the warm yellow varnished fuselage.

You know, you just might be able to make a go of this painting gig...

Russ,

The color study is wonderful. I agree with Greg and Robert, the play of light on the fuse is just great.

Actually, the early morning fog and sunrise reflection on the clouds does it for me. You rock!!!! But the play of light on the fuse is beautiful.

Russ:

I am a huge fan of your work. Love the subject and the light quality of this piece. It is wonderfully rendered.

However, before starting the final version, IMHO there are two areas that you may wish to revisit ...

The first is the upper wing. The area around the port aileron and wing tip doesn't look right. It may actually BE correct, but to my eye it seems oddly foreshortened. Gives the impression the upper wing is the same cord as the lower wing. Also, the characteristic angular shape of the Albatros upper wing is somehow lost. That said, rendering these shapes in an almost edge-on view is quite a challenge. Geometrically this could be absolutely correct. It is just that to my eye it does not describe the shape convincingly. Maybe it is just me.

The second is the light on the lower surfaces of the wings. If the light is coming from below and casting a shadow on the fuselage, it seems as if the lower surfaces should be more illuminated. Albeit close to edge on.

Again, just suggestions offered as constructive criticism. The overall effect is excellent, and I do indeed love the painting.

Cheers!

Tom
