Hi,
I thought I might share with you a recent commission I completed for a WWI entusiast a few weeks ago. He wanted a painting of a raid on Haubourdin airfield in 1918. It included Se5s from AFC 2 Squadron (featured) and RFC 92 Squadron as escort. Camels of AFC 4Sqd began the raid by bombing and strafing at low level, and can be seen climbing away from the area as the Se5s begin their descent to go in and strafe. DH9s followed the Se5s on a bombing run. Top cover was provided by the RFC Se5s at 11000' and 88 Squadron Bristol Fighters at 13000'. I had to try and fit all the aircraft in without the composition looking comical Thanks to Arno at Memorial Flight for some of the Se5 refs. The airfield detail is courtesy of a photo and a map featured in a book by Col. Strange of the AFC, who took part in the raid. The lead Camel is flown by Capt.
Harry Cobby, who lead the Camels. Thanks to Russ who managed to identify the Se5 pilot for the client.
The client was very happy with the end result - always a satisfying outcome for the artist.
Cheers,
Steve
