WIP DH-2...maybe this time I'll finish it =D

This model is so close to being done...I have to finish it. It's been posted here before but now it has some wings and other bits. Even though it's close, there's still a lot of work to do. I want to spend a little more time on this then I did on my P40, which is rather low poly compared to this model.

Upon completion I would like to do some renders with a Alb.DIII I have laying around. Theres a lot of cool possibilities for subject matter.

One area I am having trouble with is the rear of the fuse...like the underside where the wings mount...but a inside view. Any period photos I have, they are too dark to see real good. The replicas appear to not be accurate due the a different engine??? Not sure.

Anyhow..all tips, comments, crits and or flames will be appreciated. =)

the model is way heavy....Lots of tris.... but it's still manageable at this point. It will be about half the count of my DR.I model. Not every bolt will have threads..only ones for close in shots. The rest, that like hold the spars and wires together will be low poly with softned edge to save on resources at render time.....chuggg.. cchugg...

Looks great. Is the DH-2 for a project or just for you?

awe..I try but I only have the fat colors...maybe when I grow up I can get that cool box of 64

Thanks for having a look =) It's just for me.....but all my models are available for purchase actually heh really it's just been nagging me for 2 years now. And it's sort of a nice break from working on my DR.I. The Alb model was done for DogFights. I'll just fix a few things and do some new textures and it will work well with the DH-2. Im thinking MvR/Hawker maybe.

It'll be cool =)

Basically polys to sub-D . . Started with a cube and roughed in the basic shape by adding geometry to help define the edges. Then cut in half and added a few more edge loops and definition. Then some extrudes and bam!

The rolled edge was a real pain to get to smooth out with a nice flow.......lots of vert pushing.

Anyhow good times.

oooohhh shiny...

The fuse, wings, and struts are all done now. Now it's on to the tail boom and other surfaces. The wing struts need to be re shaped some. Engine area and cock pit also remain left to do. Never mind the goofy seat above. Oh and finish the wheels and axle...lots still.

Im not happy with my translucency shader...it's not an easy one to get to look right. It's gonna take a more specialized shading network...Or I might just fake it with transparency and bump up the incandescence via a alpha map...like just to lighten the area between the spars. Idk yet..its kind of pain. It will for sure get it's own pass at render time either way.

You can see the wing structure some on the bottom wings...they have a semi have semi transparent material right now..which isn't the same as being translucent...and lol..it's really more about the shadows than the lighting it seems. Maybe I need to look at sub surface scattering .

Using an alpha map would probably be the best way to get the right look for the transparencies. That way you could also enhance the look of the parts inside the wing.
