Hi Terrence, Rexee---guys,
Dress regulations for the R.N.A.S. were promulgated on 26th.June 1914 and read---"Officers of the Royal Navy graded as flying officers wear the uniform of the military branch of the Royal Navy but of the relevant rank they hold in the air service with the addition of an Eagle on the left sleeve above the distinction lace, and on the left shoulder strap---changes in the cuff rank lace system were introduced at the same time.
The photo. that the painting is from does show clearly the two hoops--upper one with a central loop which would denote a flight commander---but if khaki (or the 'new' light blue) it perhaps did not have the eagle above the hoops on the earlier dark blue uniform.
The large 'wings' on the cap are not correct---they are creases in the cap itself, clearly seen in the photo., and indeed it would have been the ordinary cap badge of wreath topped by crown--but with the anchor to centre replaced by eagle.
Think this is correct---a bit more 'visible'---and an error, i think---B7270 did not have it's Rotherham pump fitted on s'board centre section strut--but was probably (out of site)on same side U/C leg
Dave.
