Chapman?

I have a client in Hawthorne, NV who owns a second hand store. She really has a lot of nice things. One that I have my eye on is a colored pencil drawing of a Fokker DrVII by an artist whose last name is Chapman. I cannot recall the first and middle initials. I wanna say G. K. But, I just don't recall. The drawing is nice. It's framed and matted and Patricia is asking $349 for it. Does anyone know anything about the artist?

Nobody's ever heard of this "artist"....huh? Well, that tells me plenty. That pic ain't nowhere near worth the asking price. 'Nuff said, I guess. lol Thanks....in this case...for your silence.

There was a Charles Chapman with the 94th aero squadron (USAS). Also a British aviator with the same surname. If this was a "hobby" drawing by a pilot, then it could be interesting.

I seem pretty sure that the initials on the drawing were G.K. But, I'll call Patricia tomorrow and ask some questions. I'll ask here how she came upon the pic and what she might know about it. I'll ask her how she arrived at the price. She's a pretty smart lady.

I think that the artist could have beeen the Famous Victor Emmanuel Chapman
of escadrille Lafayette
In the book "the lafayette escadrille " by Dennis Gordon,(a shiffer military history book" it is said that

"He had no, aptitude for sports,none for books,none for music:but always a deep passion for color and scenery,and a real talent for all form of decorations,which we hoped would lead him toward painting or architecture...
........,Chapman demonstrated a talent toward painting and architecture.And he sailed to paris immediatly following graduation to study under Mr Gromort to prepare for admission to the Beaux Arts."

Are you sure that the drawing represent a Fokker DVII ?
In that case it is impossible that Victor Chapman was the author of the drawing because he died in 24 june 1916 and the first flight of The DVII was in january 1918...
The Other Chapman who flew with 94th Aero was Charles Wesley "Carl" Chapman-He was Killed on 3 May 1918-I do not know if he was talented for the drawing ... but he has certainly seen fokker DVII

Cher Bruno. Yes, the picture is of a Fokker DrVII. It is labelled in one corner of it. In the other corner is the artist's signature. I'm pretty sure it says "G. K. Chapman. I am sure of the Chapman part...which is partly what piqued my interest in it. It's a colored pencil drawing. Just the aeroplane and no background. It's a very nice drawing. Very neat lines. I wish I could remember more details....markings and such.

I've emailed the store owner and asked for any information she can give me about it. When she writes back, I'll let you all know. Then, we can go from there.

If she was asking considerably less than $349 for it, I'd've snapped it up. (I opted, instead, for a linen coat that is reminiscent of around 1916, and a dress. The dress is from the late '50s or early '60s that kinda reminds one of Jackie. It's silk, VERY well hand-sewn, with beaded lace on the bodice that was also sewn on by hand. And, nooooooo....none of you boys may try it on! lol)

Fokker D.VII, two winged job?

The time and the first two initials of Chapman make all of the possible difference in value.

Hon, read my initial post. The picture is a colored pencil drawing of a Fokker DrVII. Of that I am certain....cause it says so right on the picture. The artist's last name is Chapman. I believe the initials are G. and K. I wish I could take a pic of it. But, I don't know when I can make it back to Hawthorne as it is a 2 1/2 hour drive from Reno. (However, it's becoming clear that a drive back to see the pic and make some serious notes of details might well be in order.) In the meantime, I shall await Patricia's email with what information she has about it. (If she doesn't email me within a couple days, I'll call her.)

(Perhaps this weekend, I'll drag the bf to Hawthorne, anyway. We can stop at Linda's Historic Wabuska Bar in Yerington....a place Mike (my bf) has wanted to visit for some time. lol So, I might be able to lure him on a day-trip with a promise to stop by Wabuska on the way to or from. lol
