Hi,

I was hoping that someone could give me their impressions of the German book 'Flieger am Feind', by Werner von Langsdorff, published in 1934. I would like to know something of it's content., and whether or not it would be a good source for accurate information.

regards

Hi Wingedwarrior,

"Flieger am Feind" is a compilation of several short memories given by german pilots. These stories mostly covers only one event. Most of the stories were written by Jasta Pilots, some came from 2-seater or bomber crews and few from Zepellin guys.

The book was published in 1934 and it was intended to boost the moral of the youth in Germany and to fill the young boys in Germany with enthusiasm for the new Luftwaffe. Because of this you have to be carefull to use the stories as a source for 100% accurate information.

But it is a great read anyway. If I remember correct a few years ago some of the stories were translated and appeared in one of the back issues of OTF.

BTW, there is also a little story provided by Ritter von Schleich. The story is also covered in lenght in the book by Lange. It's about his illness in summer 1917 when he 'escaped' from his doctor, had an unallowed front-flight and had a bad dogfight with some twenty french-men which he hardly survived. Cool story but is it true...?

Thanks Immo for your opinion on the book. I will probably buy it, as it undoubtedly contains some choice material!
