Lewis's war experiences were merely the prelude to a widely varied career, during which he operated as a commercial aviator (immediately following the war, with Vickers), flying instructor (in Peking), as a playwright, Hollywood writer, co-founder of the BBC, translator, broadcaster, sheep farmer (in South Africa), civil servant (for the U.N.) and journalist.
During the Second World War Lewis again served with the Royal Air Force, initially as a flying instructor and, by the close of the war, responsible for staging posts in Sicily and Greece.
Finally (semi) retiring to Corfu in later life, Lewis continued to work to the end, this time as a poet.
Cecil Lewis died in London on 27 January 1997 at the age of 98.
A most amazing life.
