WW1 German Sub sunk in the Great Lakes

Yes, there is a WW1 German UC class sub sunk in Lake Michigan about 100 miles off Chicago. I could make up a great story and say it was a sunk while on it's way to strike the Midwest or something...but it was brought to Navy pier after the war and then sunk a few years later.

Be sure to check out their other recoveries of WWII navy aircraft. Fresh water has a way of preserving things!

Hi,

Would have been to good to be real !

UC97 was to join II U-Flottille Mittelmeer and entered service on the 6th September 1918 under Oblt.z.S. Walter Wiedemann, but never made it to the front and was brought to Harwich on the 22nd November 1918 with the rd Staffel.

She's one of the only wrecks that might be worth to be raised as she's not a wargrave. It would be a really unique piece !

Best from Johan

Imagine what could be learned if that wreck weere raised! By placing with U-505 in Chicago, the two could be compared for examining the technological changes between the wars. Very instructive, I would think!

Hi Zeppelin,

It would be much worse if you had to place a Type UB III next to a WW II Type VII. One could forget noticing the differences ! Just to say that the Type VII (b) was based on the UB III class.
Some photo's of this type will soon be added at my photo album on the matter.

Best from Johan
