Kosh, Johan- Rick and Dan-San must not be looking at this section. Dan's color 6 views are all finished. Rick is working on photo captions and putting the book into Schiffer's format. Should not be more than a month or two, I hope.

Rick Buddy: I hear ya...and I feel yer payne! Am proofing galleys for Clash of Carriers, the biggest book ever about the Marianas Turkey Shoot. (Shameless hype: due from Penguin in November.) Though I gotta index names from TWO navies, it's prob'ly fewer names than you're dealing with.
What's your project's word count and photos? (I expended a world-wide effort at scrounging rare pix but the publisher only sprang for about 20.)

Word count? WORD COUNT !! Heck, I'm lucky to do a page count. About 700+ pages (double spaced). Haven't printed the (*#^@!&% single spaced. Photos top 200+ (but Schiffer may elect to cut some of these out due to poor quality!). About 100 hard copies and another 100 as scans. R.

Rick,
how do you create the index before you get the galleys? Once Bob Biondi at Schiffer (I assume it's Bob) has laid it all out, none of the page numbers will match what you have now - well.. maybe page 1 will be nearly right! I can see that you can sort out what you want to index now, but you can't tie it down to page numbers.
Going by experience, after sending of the formatted manuscript, it will be at the very least another 6 months before reaching the stores, probably nearer 9 to 12 months.

Granted I can not fill in the page numbers until I receive the final proofs. BUT, I can start making my alphabetical list and also high-lighting the names within the text so that I can easily (?) find them once the proofs arrive. Then (I hope) all I'll have to do is fill in the correct page number(s). At least that's my current plan of attack! Any suggestions readily accepted! R.

Rick- Looks like my two months was a little optimistic. This author stuff sounds like a hard way to make a living.
