I agree with Schiffer quality. I can't remember buying one that I was disappointed with. I look forward to seeing them, and probably buying a couple as well.

Well, I got my Christmas list ready and it is only January. I like the themes to all three books. By the way, RDosier, what city in NKY are you from?

At the end of the day you get what you pay for, Schiffer production quality is quite superb, the cover artwork is duplicated on the covers, not just the dust cover. The paper is superb, the colour is great, ...I could go on and you would just say I'm biassed coz I'm a Schiffer author and you would be right.

I don't like having to pay twice what you pay in the States, but if you need the book where else are you going to get the information? And new books from Alex are not exactly commonplace!

Didn't mean to tread on any toes! What I did mean is that I have very little disposable income at this time! Reference my income in US dollars, this book will be a strech! If my income were put in Euros or whatever it would still be the same! I know what a value any of these books are, and will somehow find the money! I wasn't complaining about the price persay, just that I wish my Hobby allowance was MUCH LARGER!

Hey RagIII,

wasn't meaning to criticise your post, just to point out how much worse it is this side of the pond, to you $70, to us $140! And wages are mostly a lot less in the UK than in the States!

Do books published here double in cost by crossing the Atlantic? How much is a typical Grub Street offering over there?

I find that books are slightly cheaper in England than here in the US. When I bought Norman Franks' The Storks from Grub Street it cost me $35.00 US. To buy the same book in England was 20 pounds. Now I am not the most knowledgeable on exchange rates, so I cannot say how much more books are over here than in England, but they seem to cost slightly more here.

I don´t know the exchange rate between USD and GBP directly, but $35 is about 29.7 euros and £20 is about 29.8 euros. So the difference is minimal. Do note that Grub Street is a British publisher, so it should be natural that their British prices are lower than US ones. Usually a British book can be had for about the same price in the US and the UK, but a US book in Britain is usually not inconsiderably cheaper in the US than in the UK.

Speaking of Schiffer. I have about 30 of their books. It is definitely a leading publisher of military/aircraft related books.

As for the quality, overall it is very good, and if some annoying typos and like errors weren´t there quite superb. Just recently I bought their new book on the B-29 (by William Wolf, a dentist!) and it is excellent with best tech detail I have seen on the subject.

British folks, I think there may be a way to buy Schiffer books cheaper (at their US prices) from the UK. At least I can. MikeW may know how...

Ahh..... sorry. yes, as a Schiffer Author I can buy them at significant discount, it's part of the contract. However, still no cheaper than the "dollar" price.

Don't tell anyone, but I have purchased several of my books at author's discount and shipped them to Australia marked as "gifts" for customs purposes - with the air freight they are still cheaper than Australian retail!
