Three New Winners from Schiffer in April
Hi All,
I just got my Spring 2006 catalog from Schiffer in the mail, and found some very exciting news (sorry, no "Schlachtflieger" announced in this one). THREE exciting new WWI aviation books are announced for April publication, two of them by stalwart members of our own forum. They are:
"The Imperial German Eagles of World War I - Their Postcards and Pictures" by Lance Bronnenkant Ph.D. I know Lance well and know he's produced an OUTSTANDING book. This book will focus on the Sanke, Liersch and NPG photo postcards and will go into much greater depth than Charlie Woolley's fine book on the Sankes. This one will give the backstory of how, when & where those postcard photos were taken and reproduce a lot of associated photos (taken at the same time) which were not printed as postcards. A whopping 600 photos, 400 pages, $69.95.
2nd is "A History of No. 6 Naval RNAS in World War I" by a certain Mike Westrop - so you know it's great! Looks like Mike has uncovered a lot of very new info on this 'forgotten' squadron, and this one will feature more superb profiles by Mark Miller detailing the Sqn's Nieuport 17bis Scots. 224 Pages, 170 photos; what more can you want? $59.95
Then there's "British Single-Seater Fighter Squadrons in WWI" by Alex Revell. It promises to be the full story of RFC and RAF fighter squadrons by an acknowldged expert - I can't wait!! 400 pages, over 530 photos. $69.95.
Start saving those pennies NOW.
Greg

Hi Greg...
I thought I had read in on of your previous posts that you are working on a Dr.I project. If so, can you let me know and fill me in and how things are going, also when it's going to print.
If there is any thing I can do to help Please let me know.
Thanks...
Lloyd...

Matt- There are good French books out there, but most are in French. Great book on Guynemer with photo captions in English, one on Guiguet and Dorme with text in French and English, and one on French Escadrilles from 1912-1920, with escadrille markings, in French. Have to hunt, but they are out there. Plus the French have their own national archive of photos much like the IWM. Plus there have been Osprey books on the Storks and Lafayette Escadrille and a Storks book by Grub street. Not nearly the coverage of the Brits, Yanks, and Germans, but some really good books re available. Plus Bernard Klaeyle' is doing a definitive book on Nieuport aircraft (he also did the Guynemer book), and his knowledge on the subject is encyclopedic. We are trying to encourage him to make it in English and French. His comment on a Nieuport photo I sent him was " It is Nieuport 17, but it is rigged like a 23(!?)." In the AF, we called that "exceptionally well qualified" on the subject.

Matt, If the French had played a more significant role perhaps there would be more books, and a decent Nieuport 17 in 1/72nd

I am tempted by the Alex Revell title. although @$70.00 it is a bit much for my budget, I hold my copy of High in the Empty Blue as one of my most treasured books!

You guys, you don't know you are born!
Despite an exchange rate of approximately 2:1 between the dollar and the pound, the $70 will have become £70 if you want to buy it in England! Its even worse for Australians wanting to buy Schiffer books.
At the end of the day you get what you pay for, Schiffer production quality is quite superb, the cover artwork is duplicated on the covers, not just the dust cover. The paper is superb, the colour is great, ...I could go on and you would just say I'm biassed coz I'm a Schiffer author and you would be right.
I don't like having to pay twice what you pay in the States, but if you need the book where else are you going to get the information? And new books from Alex are not exactly commonplace!
Mike
