Well, inspired by the actual arrival of real books into people's hands I swallowed my reservations and put in my order (again!).

Can't wait...

The Book Has Finally Been Shipped

Sorry, folks, I'm new here and still figuring out my way around. I posted this reply to the OLD thread, so I had to copy here it where you might actually find it. And thanks for your kind words, though please note that I worked on the book with my father, not my brother:

I'm pleased to say that Scarecrow Press has finally shipped my book. It had been scheduled for release in late August 2006, but difficulties with the indexer delayed it three months. I hope you've received your copy by now if you've ordered one and that you're enjoying it.

It does have an index and photos, which the original 1939 edition did not have. The one thing it does not contain is the set of hand-drawn, colored foldout maps of the Western Front. Including even one of those would have made it prohibitively expensive. The map is important, however, so if you're buying the book (or even if you're not), PLEASE go to the website and download the pdf of the 1918 map. (Ignore the directive not to.) It will make my book a lot more useful to you. The website is www.scarecrowpress.com; type "martel" into the Quick Search.

Thanks Steve for taking the time to visit these pages. I'm still keenly (very) awaiting my copy, but hopefully it won't be much longer. Books to Australia always take time.

I went to the page at Scarecrow as you kindly suggested to d/load the map, but on the book page I can't see any mention of it. What am I missing? Cheers

My copy arrived last week.

I am very pleased to have this book! Not only does it cover an important area that has been negleted, but Martel's narrative is very circumspect as he gives a very thorough description, including the activities of the German forces.

Again, kudos to pere et fil Suddaby. Not only is the translation very readable and well laid out, but the editorial insertions of more current, clarifying research are very helpful. Additionally having these as bracketed insertions rather than footnotes helps not hinders the narrative!

Great book, I am definately finishing it prior to starting Schlactflieger!

Got my copy Monday. Great effort. Not enough French information out there and although I can work my way through German books, I have no clue while trying to translate French. Hopefully the Suddaby clan will be encouraged to try another book.

Steve- Will definitely download the map.

Martel's 1918 Map

Cobby, the downloadable map is under a category something like "Selected Readings" or "Reading Selections". (At least it was the last time I looked.) I would have attached the pdf to this posting and saved you the trouble, but the file is much larger than it can handle.

Please let me know if it's still hard to find. --Steve

This is embarrassing...

I just went to the website and it looks like they removed the map! In its place is a pdf of the beginning section of the book. I'm sorry, folks -- I'm going to have to email them and find out what is going on.

Steve,
You have a ; character in the link to the Scarecrow Press website which does not belong in the link. You will have to edit it out of the link and move it after the link.

I hope you can get the map back. How many maps were left out of the book? Any chance of getting all of them from the Scarecrow website?

Frank.

David, that book is just up your alley. I bet it helps fill in a lot of gaps.

Just got mine this afternoon, looks quite interesting on first glance.

Took about a week ordering from the scarecrow publisher website.
