Sopwith Dolphin

Just wondering what books/articals might be out there on this aeroplane? I have Mick Davis "Sopwith Aircraft" and the Dolphin datafile (54).

Any recommendations?

Check out the Osprey publication Dolphin and Snipe Aces of World War 1 by Norman Franks. Aircraft of the Aces series #48.

Thanks Tom, I'd forgotten about the Osprey book. Anyone else have any recommendations?

It's odd how the Dolphin seems to be the forgotten Sopwith fighter. So much more fuss is made of the Snipe, yet the Dolphin was arguably the best Sopwith fighter of the war. And it served in more Squadrons and for a much longer period than the Snipe.

You might be interested to read the late Dick King's 2-Part Pilot report in World War I Aeroplanes, No. 190 Nov. 2005, and No.191 Feb. 2006.

These are based on his experiences with the Hisso-powered reproduction that he used to fly at Rhinebeck Aerodrome. He also writes about the Snipe in his book "The Skies Over Rhinebeck".

Thanks greenknight. Basically I'm after anything that covers the Dolphins development and operational use.

Hi Pips,
Aeroplane Monthly did a Database on the Dolphin back in December 2001. I will try to find it. Maybe mail you a copy.

Here's a good one by Maj. Cecil Montgomery-Moore. Called: "THAT'S MY BLOODY PLANE". Gives his experiences flying the Dolphin (E4514) in the war.
