I'm surprised that no one has mentioned F.M. Cutlack's classic "The Australian Flying Corps". It is the bedrock for any research into the AFC, and contains an inordinate number of references that relates to No.4 AFC.

I just gave Gordon a call after seeing your post, and I would love the opportunity to bring some photos along to illustrate the inevitable discussions about AFC & RFC topics, if you would like that. For any one else who might feel left out, please don't! I have a huge collection of photos of First World War aeroplanes, about 5,000 or so, and am always willing to have any of them published. If anyone requires photos at any time, please let me know. Generally speaking, the albums are divided into the following categories: AFC, RFC, RNAS, German Air Service and US Air Service.
Cheers, David.

A short history of No 4 SAqn, AFC, appeared in the "Over the Front" Journal Volume 1, #2, ppg 145 - 158, 1986.

The original squadron records (SRB, war diary, combat reports) are available on microfilm from the Australian War Memorial. 2 reels I think; I would have to dig up my copy. In fact, all for AFC squadrons are on microfilm at the AWM. Whether the originals are there or not I do not know.
Frank.

Hi Frank - Yes indeed, microfilms are at AWM ... and by year's end they will be digitised and online also. I'll be getting somebody to look over the microfilms for me, as I won't be back in Australia before the end of the project. Alas, AWM doesn't sell copies of the microfilms any more, and the digitised copies won't be available in time for this project. AWM estimate 6-12months for the digitisation project of all their WW1 war diaries to be completed. cheers, john

You are very welcome, and it is always a pleasure to spend time with people such as yourself and Gordon talking about First World War aeroplanes, and looking at photos. I strongly encourage anyone who would like to publish any First World War aviation photos to ask me. I would love to publish some photos, but competing priorities keep me away from writing far too often unfortunately! The next best option is to offer other researchers the opportunity to use some of the photos I have in my collection, provided that the photos are to be published. It has always been my intention to see these photos published, so that researchers can benefit from them.
Thank you very much for the link, I will have a look! I don't know how often I could get on there, but I am sure it is an excellent site.
Regards,
David.
