Mailing...

Hi Jeff, Hi Aroth, and All,

I asked our printer today about the mailing and was assured that all 1,118 copies of WW1 AERO #199 were mailed on 22 September.

It would cost a little over $4,000 to send them out by flat-rate Priority Mail (within the US) and some $3,500 to send the ones beyond the US by flat-rate Priority International Mail. So, that would be $7,500.

Currently, the domestic bulk rate and lowest rate beyond the US costs about $1,400.

As it is now, the Membership/Subscription rate covers roughly 80% of the costs of printing and bulk-rate mailing with donations, back issues sales and Master Materials List sales accounting for the difference.

Bulk rate is awfully slow, but to use anything else would require a significant increase in our Membership/Subscription rate

Please let us know when your copies arrive.

Best,
cfgray

Hi,
A friend of mine from Long Island called me this evening to mention that he received his copy earlier today, so they are certainly on their way.

In a related bit of news, I received a Priority Mail (2-day delivery) package this Thursday (Oct. 2) that was sent from VA to NY, which was mailed and postmarked on August 25!

Regarding the special offer being offered for WWI Aero 197-200, remember...it would make a neat gift for a friend interested in early av. history!

Best regards,
Tom P.

It's here!

WWI Aero, Issue #199 finally arrived yesterday. I was so excited to see it, I nearly tore it while removing the outer envelope. I HATE the cover photo. I know I'm alone here on this one, but I don't think you could have picked a worse photo for reasons already discussed here on the "drome" earlier this year. I'm such a huge fan of the M.1, and this photo just doesn't cut it. There are so many better choices. I give the choice an "F".

On the positive side, I enjoyed the article on Matt and Dick King, Jeff's D.VII project, the Spad XIII project, and Achim's article too.

One last thing.....they keep getting my address wrong in the "Wants and Disposals". I've contacted them a couple of times to correct this. I guess I'll have to try it a third time.

Overall, I'm pleased with the issue. I don't think it's as "spectacular" as others think. Some have compared the print and paper quality to OTF. OTF is still better.

Remember, just my opinions...........man that M.1 photo stinks!

My Gallery
Landed in NJ

Carroll -

Mine arrived yesterday (6th Oct.).

I have to say - not being so intimately attached to the spinner of the M.1Cas out good friend Leatherhead - I enjoyed the cover photo. The additional shots inside of the same airplane with the spinner on, more than made up for it, but I'm sure in Mesopotamia when it was 105 in the shade, they flew the airplane with the spinner off....

I enjoyed Jeff's article and Achim's grand scheme for the Fokker FlugPlatz - what a great idea. I'd love to go over and fly his whole stable of 60 machines if we all live long enough to have it happen !

Thanks for fine job on the pages devoted to my artwork too. It is much more than I expected.

I'm still reading the remainder - Martha's ORA adventure, the petition page, Dan Hagadorn's article, etc., but should get through it all in the next few days.

The only squawk I have is the finding is now more book-like and the spine is not printed with the issue #. I've doodled it in on mine, but if the format will remain the same, that would be a helpful addition.

Otherwise, a sterling job all around...

Keep at it,
Mike

This & that

Hi, All,

First, Jeff, if it isn't there by Friday e-mail e at cfgray@mac.com and I will get a copy to you via Priority Mail. I can't imagine why it is taking so long.

Mike, the spine was supposed to have the logo, the "tag" (The Journal Of The Early Aeroplane) and the issue number but there was a mistake at our printer. Issues #200 and #201 will have that info on the spine. Also, Mike, thanks for your generosity in sharing your wonderful work.

Leatherhead, please send your correction to me at cfgray@mac.com, I'll make certain it is corrected in #201. Issue #200, being a commemorative issue, will depart form the normal structure and so won't have W&D.

Best,
cfgray
