This book always seems to be listed for $36.49. I'm wondering if there's anybody here who's read it and can render an opinion? It's definitely out of my budget, but with almost 700 pages I'm certainly intrigued. Anyone know this book?

NEW Valiant Volunteers: A Novel Based on the Passion...

Also, I don't believe I've ever seen any discussion about Jeff Shaara's "To The Last Man". I'm guessing many of you are familiar with this book, both Richthofen and Lufbery are main characters in it. I generally enjoyed this book, it's certainly well written, but I have to admit that it didn't especially keep me on the edge of my seat. It's pretty impossible to build suspense in a novel that follows real characters, of course. (I had the same gripe watching Ron Howard's Apollo 13; as hard as he tries to worry the viewer you already know the outcome). Still, iId be curious what others thought of this book.

Here's a couple nice old books. Each are listed with a $14.99 starting bid.

Sykes, published in the UK by John Lane in 1933. 236 pp., with 8 illustrations and 2 maps. Kohl flew as an observer with the German air forces in World War I, first in Italy, and then in France, where he and his pilot crashed and were taken prisoner. After the war he successfully flew the Atlantic. Green cloth hardback book in good condition; some soiling on the covers, slight wear on corners and edges. Interior contents good. No dust jacket. For your pleasure, i present... Mick Mannock!

Ace With One Eye Mick Mannock WWI Aviation RFC Oughton
Ace With One Eye: The Story of "Mick" Mannock VC, by Frederick Oughton and Commander Vernon Smyth, published in the UK by Muller in 1963. 308 pp., with 9 pp. of photos. The best biography of World War I ace Mick Mannock, who flew with 40, 74, and 85 Squadrons, RFC. Hardback book and dust jacket in very good condition; previous owner's name in pencil inside front cover. Two newspaper clippings about Mannock attached with paper clip. See my other military and aviation listings!
Starting Bid: $19.99

King of Air Fighters British Major Mick Mannock 1970
Very nice clean copy purchased from a collector. Pages have toned at bit at exterior edges but inside are quite white. Black boards are clean as well and unbumped and there are no names or writing. The dustjacket shows a small bit of wear to upper right hand front corner and a crease along top edge incurred due to the fact that the jacket is slightly larger than the book itself. We have protected it in brand new mylar.

Originally published in 1934, this is the biography of Edward Corringham Mannock, nicknamed "Mick" due to his possible Irish birth. He one of the great British airmen of WWI who was postumously awarded the Victoria Cross due to a strong push by the book's author. Though he was greatly upset by the number of deaths his exploits caused, Mannock's attitude belied it, as he had a strong hatred of the Germans and seemed to take delight in taking them down. Once, he scored four hits in a single day. Mannock was the highest-scoring British ace of the war, ahead even of Billy Bishop. Book contains a photo of him at frontis and one of the author a few pages later. 303 pages. Indexed.
Starting Bid: $35

I FEAR NO MAN History No 74 (Fighter) Squadron RFC RAF
The History of No.74 Squadron Royal Air Force. One of the RAF's most famous fighter squadrons, No. 74 "Tiger" Squadron first came into prominence in World War One flying S.F. 5a fighters on the Western Front. The famous Mick Mannock was one of the Flight Commanders when it arrived in France and his approach to air fighting set a pattern which the Squadron splendidly maintained, bringing down two hundred German aircraft in six months, before the Armistice. Re-born for the defence of London, it became one of the early Spitfire squadrons at Hornchurch with "Sailor" Malan, as a founder member. He was of course, to become one of the RAF's greatest aces, flying many of his victorious sorties with 74 Squadron and commanding it during the Battle of Britain. The Squadron also fought overseas sharing in various exploits in the Eastern Mediterranean before returning to Britain to take part in the Invasion of Europe in 1944, flying Spitfires once more. As the War ended it became part of the RAF's first jet fighter wing with the new Gloster Meteor fighters and ever since it has been one of the foremost fighter squadrons in the Air Force. Then in 1960 it became the RAF's first truly supersonic squadron when it flew the original Lightnings, a type with which it was associated for a whole decade, finally operating them in the Far East as the only Lightning squadron stationed there. The author Douglas Tidy served both in 74 Squadron and in the South African Air Force so has a great interest in both. Some b/w photos. 165 pages.
Starting Bid: GDP 12.50

Mick Mannock, Fighter Pilot by Adrian Smith (2001)
Superb, crisp, clean, unread and unmarked hardcover with light shelfwear to the dustjacket - VERY NICE!
Starting Bid: $79.90.... Ouch!

Norman L.R. Franks | Mannock: The Life and Death of Maj
Arguably the highest scoring RAF fighter pilot of the First World War, Edward 'Mick' Mannock's life, and most particularly his death, are still shrouded in mystery. Did he achieve as many victories as are sometimes ascribed to him? How did he die? Where did he die, and more pertinently, where do his remains now lie? Respected investigative historians Norman Franks and Andy Saunders have assessed all the evidence and cut through the speculation to build up a complete picture of the man and his achievements as a fighter pilot. Having unearthed much new and enlightening information, they present herein, perhaps the first truly balanced overview of his life. Vitally, they now also reveal exactly where Mannock VC fell in battle ninety years ago, and have now begun a quest to persuade the Commonwealth War Graves Commission to accept their findings, published here for the first time, along with numerous original photographs.
Starting Bid: $29.30

This is the first time I've seen THIS listed on ebay. Starting bid: $199

Vintage NEW ENGLAND AVIATORS 1914-1918 Vol 1 (1919)
"THIS EDITION CONSISTS OF ONE THOUSAND COPIES PRINTED AT THE RIVERSIDE PRESS, CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS, FOR THE PUBLISHING COMMITTEE OF THE NEW ENGLAND AVIATORS"

SIZE: 6" x 9" and 472 pages.

CONDITION: OVERALL Good. Front cover fabric feels loose and unglued over the boards in a few places, as if it had gotten wet. However, there is no stain or any sign of water damage. (See lower left of scan, near the spine.) Top and bottom edges of the spine are worn, fraying, and torn at the very bottom. Back cover is fine except the corners bend inward. Owner's name and "1920" neatly written in the upper right corner of the first page. Front endsheet beginning to split at the spine hinge. Still holding together well. Pages are in excellent condition, including top, bottom, and side edges of the text block.

This is only the first volume of a two volume set. As always, let the buyer beware. New England Aviators is a great set of books, but this is only half of it. Typical sets run around $300-400. Many are ex-library copies, so watch out for that as well if you're collecting.

Finally, Schiffer re-printed the set in 1997, and that set can usually be found for $35-40 per book, less if you look hard. The covers for the reprint feature Jim Dietz artwork.

Ahhh! Thanks, Dan. I knew this was only one of two volumes but had no idea that Schiffer had reprinted these. Good to know.
