Paolo Miana has without much fanfare written his first aviation related book. This book covers the interesting subject of the Caproni bombers during WW1 or to give the book the original Italian title ‘
I Bombardieri Caproni nella Grande Guerra’.
The book covers in great detail the Caproni biplane and triplane bombers. The pictures and especially the detail drawings of parts of the machine (for instance details of the landing gear) are really mouthwatering. Almost all of these illustrations come from the Archives of the Caproni Family, which undoubtedly has preserved the legacy of Count Gianni Caproni impeccably. The picture prsentation in the book is luckily in high quality, so the pictures and drawings are presented in the best of style.
Not only is there an abundance of pictures of completed machines, but there are also pictures of the construction of these machines in the Caproni factory. One of the gems is the series construction of the Caproni Triplanes in a factory hall. Then one realizes that only master carpenters were allowed in …..
I also noted a chart on which all operational Caproni bombardment flights on the western French front are drawn. A lot of them started from Belfort and went as far as Friedrichshafen. The map is named ‘Bombardamenti con Caproni sulla Fronte Franchese’.
As you might have sensed already I am mighty enthusiastic about this book in the Italian language. Do yourself a favor and buy this book (the book is not really very expensive). Together with all the pictorials you get, there is the chance to read the story in impeccable Italian.
Personally I hope Paolo Miana will write a lot more on Italian aviation during WW1 and pre-1914.
