Upcoming Osprey book on 56 Sqdn -Alex!
Hi All,
I hope I'm not letting the cat out of the bag here. However, in common with its usual policy of announcing books waaaay before they're published, Osprey has let Amazon.com preview-announce an upcoming "Aviation Elite Units" book on 56 Squadron. Now, who is better qualified to write such a book than Alex Revell? Fortunately, that's who's writing it:
No 56 Sqn RAF/RFC (Aviation Elite Units): Alex Revell, Harry Dempsey: Books" target="_blank">Amazon.com: No 56 Sqn RAF/RFC (Aviation Elite Units): Alex Revell, Harry Dempsey: Books
For those of us fortunate enough to possess (and treasure) High in the Empty Blue, this book will inevitably be rather small in comparison. There's no way a brief Osprey book can compete with the massive HITEB, but this new book will provide a concise, well-illustrated and affordable history of this classic unit by the best authority ever. I wouldn't be surprised if Alex has uncovered some new material as well. There's no other RFC/RAF unit more deserving of the title "Elite Unit".
I can't wait.

The 56th is one of my favorite Allied units. I will certainly purchase this book for my collection. Thank you for the heads up.

Hi Greg,
Thank you very much for letting us all know! I will look forward to seeing it! Is Alex a member here? I would be very interested to offer him some of my photos, in the event that he has not seen some of them before. I am very keen to have as many of my photos as possible published. The collection I have is probably well known - at least the person who collected them was well known, and I would be very surprised if there were not some which have not been pulished before. I am assuming and hoping of course that the opprotunity to provide such photographs is still current.
Thank you very much for any assistance you might be able to provide.
Yours Sincerely,
David.

Mate,
Sure Alex is a member here. He most probably has one or two pics that nobody on this site has ever seen.

Bonjour Greg!
Well that is good news ... though the wait is long. I assume that the book will trace the history of 56 Squadron after the Great War as well ...
To date Osprey has published but few histories of British units. Imagine the possibilities ... Russ Gannon writing of 1 Squadron ... Jon Guttman writing of 20 Squadron ...

Kirk,
I'm afraid that the book only covers the squadon's activities in WW1. The remit was for only 39,000 words. Sorry about that. I'm a little concerned about the cover art. It appears to have an incorrect sqdn marking on the SE5a. But I'm sure that can be resolved - hopefully!
Thanks to all for your interest.
Regards
Alex

Hi Alex, it's great to hear from you! Are you still able to accept photos?

David,
Thanks for your kind offer but all the photos for the forthcoming 56 book for Osprey have been processed. If you have any photos of 56 Squadron that you think I might not have I'd be very grateful if I could see them.
Alex
