Another new book for 2009...
From Amazon.com: BLACK FOKKER LEADER by Peter Kilduff. It covers Leutnant der Reserve Carl Degelow, a completely new work with unpublished material about Degelow and his comrades. Grub Street Press (May 2009), ISBN-10: 1906502285,

Interesting DJM. I have a copy of Germany's Last Knight of the Air: The Memoirs of Major Carl Degelow translated and edited by Peter Kilduff, 1979. It is a great book, and really rounded out the extensive information booklet I got with a decal sheet for the Fokker D.VII's of his Jasta.
I wonder what new information Peter Kilduff has uncovered, if any. I'll definitely be buying this one. Thanks for posting.
Warren

I wonder how "completely new" Black Fokker Leader can be, given that Germany's Last Knight of the Air was a pretty comprehensive treatment of Degelow's career. I notice that the dust jacket photo of both books is the same. Perhaps Mr. Kilduff, who occasionally posts here on the Aerodrome forum, will enlighten us as to how much of the content is altogether new?

Tomvrille,
I wonder too. On one had, as you say, Last Knight was pretty thorough, especially for the times. I wonder if some new information has come up since?

Hi Tomvrille,
I imagine that Peter will turn up here before long. However, having assisted just a tiny bit with some photos, etc for this book, I can assure you that it will contain a great deal of new material!! It is much more than Degelow's own story (which, of course, features prominently) but is a detailed history of Jasta 40 and its operations as well. The book will have plenty of new illustrations, too.
Yes, the covers of the two books are similar - but that's only because that photo of Degelow with his D.VII is such a classic, iconic image! Why not use it "again", if it works so well?

Hi Gregvan,
Thanks for the update! I agree completely with going with what works, but in this case, it raised suspicions that this might be basically a reprint with just a few cosmetic changes to earlier content. I've always enjoyed Mr. Kilduff's work, and it is good to know that these suspicions were unfounded. Now I can sit back and wait patiently for the release date of the new book.
TV ....

Thanks Greg for that info, I'll definitely keep it in my must get list. I have a bunch of Jasta 40 D.VII's to build!

Yes, Greg, now that all of the new book's materials are at the publisher's, I am "turning up" on The Forum. And, as you know from our discussions, there is much new material, a better translation of Charly's texts (and 30 years of additional experience with a foreign language tends to do that), and many more British, French and German archival materials. Plus, of course, your fine line art drawings and other resources, as well as Ronny Bar's color views of Jasta 40 aircraft.
And, as you note, that image of Charly and his D.VII is iconic. Thanks to you, I have a better quality image than the signed photo Charly provided.
Thanks again, Greg (this time in public).
Peter
