Pilots ordered to wear spurs

Read in one of the far too many ( according to the wife ) books I have, that some pilots were ordered to wear spurs. Cannot find the reference after a number of days searching. It could be RFC or US, probably on training.
Any one else heard of this or have a reference?

Cheers Terry

I too remember reading that in one of my books, and seem to recall it was US pilots that it referred to, although like yourself, I can't for the life of me remember which book it was I read it from, although it was certainly one of my own ones. If it occurs to me which one, I'll let you know.

Just because it was in one of the books I read doesn't mean it is true of course, as there are certainly plenty of 'history' books that perpetuate myths.

Cheers Chock,
I know what you mean about "history" books" I read some time ago Albert Ball had to parachute to safety
"Never let the truth get in the way of a good story"
Arch Whitehouse would no doubt agree with that.

Ordered NOT to wear spurs

Spurs were a required part of the cavalry officer's daily, walking out or dress uniforms. In the USAS this had to be specifically addressed as entering or exiting the aircraft it was easy to damage the sidewall fabric, or seat. The spurs were in fact little more than a brass or steel stem with a rounded protrusion at its tip.

I have the image of a major type character being somewhat annoyed at the men on parade not wearing the "proper" attire

I did read somewhere that the German officers were initially told to wear their swords -but that they could leave their spurs behind.

Cheers.

Amazing to find this post today. Browsing through Ebay last night, I found a picture of a German two-seater crew standing in front of their aircraft and they were both wearing spurs. I chalked it up to sleep depravation. I'll see if I can find it again and post here.
