Green fields and old age
107 is good... I remember it well...
The trick here is it seldom hits freezing, and anyway, it rains a little somewhere on the island on just about every day of the year, though down here in the South West, on what is known, slightly tongue in cheek, as Ireland's Cotes d'Azure because of the Gulf Stream (may it last), we get some lovely long hot summer days - sometimes!! Last year we went straight from spring to autumn, but this year we hope for better...
And for sure feel free to quote me on the book jacket!!
Enjoy the day!!

cfgray,
thank you for that weighty and complimentary suggestion. indeed, during my journey i was lucky to meet several well-known names in aviation and got to fly with a few of them, too. there have been a few museums that have asked me for my logbook and a few other items when i'm ready to let them go, including the representatives from NASM who were at old rhinebeck aerodrome when i was there in rhe fifth month of my journey.

I agree, I am sure it will be worth the wait for the resumption of writing. It was very fortunate for me that Martha received her flight training at Kent State University. I am sure when the book is put in prospective and statistically analyzed a great number of things will appear. To have met and interviewed over ten "Octogenarian aviators" with a great number of these having their first solo in Jennies is significant. Of these was 87 years old pioneer aviatrix, Edna Gardner Whyte, who gave Martha a biennial flight review during her journey. Edna was also quite celebrated in the 1930's as an air racer competing with the boys such as Roscoe Turner and others.
Another of Martha's "Octogenarian aviators" was Johnny "Jennies to Jets" Miller, now a "Centurion Aviator."

lloyd,
thank you for the your continued patience and encouragement. i am glad kent was where i learned to fly and meet some great life-long friends, including you!
edna gardner whyte was truly amazing at 87 as was johnny miller at 82, when i flew with them in their planes on my journey. john m. miller is now 102 years old and still involved in aviation! he has to be the last living pilot who had his first solo in a jenny.

huge news!
dear friends,
i just got word from the eaa airventure forums and programs director that i made the cut to be one of the forum speakers at oshkosh airventure 2008 to give my slide show about my journey and this book in progress, titled, "Have Goggles, Will Travel!" woohoo! i have prime-time scheduling and excellent, large venues to present three times on the well-attended weekend:
Friday, August 1 at 10:00 a.m. in Forums Pavilion 1
Saturday, August 2 at 1:00 p.m. in the Vette - Museum
Saturday, August 2 at 7 p.m. in Forums Pavillion 5 (special reunion presentation for any of the journey pilots and hosts in attendance)
hope some of you can come see it. guess i better get busy again and put nose to grindstone to see if i can get this thread done before then and hopefully at least and abbreviated preview version of my book into print. if not, i think i'll still have a great presentation with a suspended ending to be continued to next year. but, hey, if indiana jones can continue his journey, then why can't i?

john, tom, lyle and crankcase,
thanks for your kind sentiments.
guess what? suddenly, since scheduling to do the oshkosh forums, three more eaa chapter meetings and a non-aviation group want me to give my presentation at their june and july meetings as warm-ups for me for oshkosh. one of them is in just two weeks at the golden west eaa airshow, (a big one in its 10th year!). i am on their forums schedule for sunday, june 8 from 11 a.m. to noon. if anyone reading this is going to it, in marysville, california, please come to my show in a big hangar. hoo boy, now i really have to turn on the speed to re-format my slide show.

vitas??!! VITAS???! ha! wow, i don't believe it! hey vitas, i think i wrote about you early on in this book thread! wow! now, i guess you're going to have to read it. changed your name just a little. great to hear from you. still in so cal?
yeah, i know i'm slow at the book writing. it's not as exciting a process as flying in old aeroplanes. hey, if you're able to come up to marysville this weekend, i'll be giving a slide show forum on the journey at the eaa golden west airshow on sunday. i think there's a pic of you in it.
